Daily Inspiration: Meet Andrew Detherow

Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrew Detherow.

Hi Andrew, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started out as film major at Georgia Gwinnett College. Being a film major and showcasing my photography skills landed me an intern with the Grizzly Digital Network (GDN) at my college. This entailed attending all practices of the men and women soccer teams to film their drills. I complied this all together and would create promotional films for the team. Following this, I immediately wanted to put my degree to use. By doing so, I received my business license for my photography business, Andrew Detherow Photography, Ltd., and wanted to capture everyone’s special moment.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has definitely has not been a smooth road. I’ve learned that the struggles we call in life are moments of opportunity that we can capitalize on. I was an orphan from another Odessa, Ukraine. I dealt with growing up and not having people to understand me due to my English and other reasons. I was not much of social butterfly and had to overcome that obstacle to market my brand. During school, I stayed an additional two years to finish my bachelor’s degree. This allowed me more time to fully understand the film industry and more time on campus. I utilized these moments to capitalize. During the influx of COVID, I moved out of my apartment and changed my day jobs of a Chef at a retirement home to having my own business. This change was not easy and it was a big move. Was it at the wrong time? Did I have support? Or did I make the right choice? All of those questions came up at the time. I strived to continue to be Andrew Detherow. Being myself have allowed the road to continue and I will not change for anyone. I allow my story and my skills to inspire others.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am what they call a “jack of all trades”. I go by titles of: Actor, Digital Media Specialist, Business Owner, Photographer, Film Agent, Immigrant, and Chef. These trades, professions, and titles describe my work and what I work hard to service others in. My specialty is in film, which is why I received my degree to pursue this field. I have set myself apart from others by owning my own business and entering the film industry by becoming an actor. As an independent actor, I have had the opportunity to act in various roles in movies/TV series: Love & Hip Hop, First Wives Club, All the Queen’s Men, Restaurant Impossible, Saints and Sinners, Johnson (Season 2), Harold and the Purple Crayon, Suitcase Killer, and Sistas. Being on TV or capturing moments through my lenses feels like my natural element. I’m most proud of my story and what I do to encourage others, whether it’s through film, photography or just letting people know where I come from. Many that know me will say that I love taking my camera out to capture “in the moment” opportunities, funny personality, love to show my cooking skills, and technology geek.

What’s next?
I have short-term goals to work with a major television company, i.e., MTV, Netflix, Amazon Prime, TLC, and etc. My ultimate goal is to have my own studios to do photography and film in one location. Meanwhile, as a product of servitude, I will continue to serve as a member of Lions Club International and use my service qualities to incorporate change in my birth country, Ukraine. I will continue to be an advocate for autism (a proud product of autism), mental health, healthy lifestyle, hearing, sight and speech conservation, youth outreach, diabetes awareness, international relations, and environmental issues.
