Today we’d like to introduce you to Anna Danielle Dean.
Hi Anna Danielle, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I grew up with my grandmother and mother as female role models. They took care of elderly family members and my mom was a Registered Nurse. Because of this, and my interests, I followed in their footsteps taking care of elderly family members. I could manually take blood pressure, check for a pulse, and answer any health-related questions for my family members by the age of maybe 6.
Initially, I thought that I wanted to pursue a degree in the healthcare field. I took healthcare classes in high school, along with art-related courses. After watching the movie “Patch Adams” with Robin Williams, I seriously contemplated becoming a Pediatric Oncologist. Although I enjoy taking care of others, I also recognized my passion for creativity and problem-solving. Because of this, and personal reasons, I decided to research different art programs and found the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) was ranked number one in the country for Interior Design. As soon as I set my sights on their website, interior design offerings, and career potential, I applied for the undergraduate program at SCAD Atlanta.
During my time at SCAD, I realized my true passion for design, creativity, sustainability, and continuing education. Since graduating Cum Laude, with my B.F.A. in Interior Design and minor in Architectural History, I have gained valuable and diverse experience. I have worked in product design, research & development, and, of course, interior design positions. I have also volunteered for organizations such as Relay for Life, AT&T Pioneers, and the International Interior Design Association (IIDA). In addition to mentoring design students and junior designers, I currently hold the Vice President of Professional Development role on IIDA’s Georgia Chapter board.
Among my achievements, I am now a Registered Interior Designer in the state of Georgia. I am also a WELL Accredited Professional, which is a sustainability certification that focuses on building health as well as the people within those buildings. While I mainly work on commercial interior design projects, I have a business that focuses on residential and retail design, as well as wellness and graphic design. Founding 146&Cambridge, LLC has been one of my most memorable accomplishments. I hope to work collaboratively on projects, meet new people, and incorporate wellness into everyday life, for clients.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road at all. I have faced personal loss, severed relationships, and mental health challenges. Mental health and work/life balance are two of my defining principles when it comes to setting boundaries. While I face challenges with my mental health, it is imperative that I maintain a routine, prioritize and take care of myself, and get enough sleep. In addition to this, I try to make a goal of regularly eating and remaining hydrated. Balancing all of this, on top of a job that can be stressful, can be a lot to manage in addition to personal life and maintaining relationships. It’s all about finding the right balance for you.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am an Interior Designer, specializing in all types of commercial spaces. From programming to construction administration, I have worked on multiple types of projects. Most notably, I have worked on airports, hospitals, schools, retail stores, and financial institutions. I am most proud of becoming a licensed interior designer.
What sets me apart from others is my diverse background. Coming from a caretaking family, nurturing is second nature to me. I care about my clients and want to help them achieve their vision. Though I do not work in the healthcare field, I bring that knowledge with me and combine my wellness certification to enhance designs through sustainable and mindful aspects/elements.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Listening and communication. As important as it is to communicate effectively, it is almost as important, if not more, to learn the value of listening. Yes, this means literally listening to what others are saying. It also means studying body sensations and language, and listening to external and internal cues, to properly analyze your environment.
