Hi Ashley, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
It all started back in the Bluegrass state of Louisville, KY, where I was born and raised. Paying close attention to how things made me feel helped me discover my purpose. Music was the only thing that kept me up late at night. I couldn’t sleep if the radio wasn’t on. At a very young age, I could tell what I was skilled at and what I truly wasn’t. I balanced out my goals and made moves that held value. Nothing is more valuable than time. If something doesn’t hold value or isn’t beneficial, then it’s not worth my time. I knew if I wanted to be a superstar, I had to have motivation to challenge myself. Ambitiously, developing as an artist took a lot of hard work and dedication. I had to do my research, know my competitors, and put my creative ideas into a business plan. Knowing the business side of the music industry is a major key to becoming successful. My drive to be who I am today builds my confidence and makes me more passionate about my future. Taking ownership of my work as a lyricist, motivational life coach, podcaster, and radio personality is empowering. However, I also enjoy being the CEO of Ashley J Entertainment Company.
Learning new avenues about the music business keeps me busy, but I absolutely love it. Not being afraid of failure has led me to more wins than losses. Failure has taught me through experience how to fight for my passions. God makes room for growth, and I never get exhausted from learning. I am humbled to have true fans/supporters who believe in the gifts and talents I embrace daily. As an artist, I have achieved amazing success from performing, speaking, releasing projects, hosting, and making appearances. My hands are in every aspect of the work, which makes me a visionary in every department. I show leadership and accountability in everything I do. My self-acceptance, self-knowledge, and self-expression come from me being genuine. I am honored to be an inspiration in the entertainment industry!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
If it was a smooth road, I missed that exit. This music business journey is full of obstacles. I’ve faced financial struggles, adapting to what’s trending, the competitors, a lack of industry knowledge, support, time to create, and critics. No matter how difficult it is to get discovered and heard as an artist, I still focus on doing as much as I can to keep myself relevant. Challenges test you to see how hungry you are for whatever it is you’re after. I’ve always chased my dreams, and I don’t get discouraged; I keep going because the lessons I’ve gained have taught me things a book can’t teach me. I wouldn’t change anything I’ve dealt with after reflecting on what I’ve encountered. My integrity is important to me, and that’s something I’ll never mishandle while pursuing my dreams.
I was taught that unfavorable fortune doesn’t mean it’s the end of the road; it means we have to press forward and choose how to react. Overcoming certain trials proves to me that I’m not only evolving but I’m also accumulating progress. I’ve been through some of the darkest situations any human can face, but trials can’t defeat me. I always feel unstoppable because I AM. I remember when I was asked to come to a studio listening session, and it ended up being one of the worst days of my life. Rather than talk about it, I utilize my lyrical skills to tell my stories. Music is my outlet, where the microphone is the only thing I’m expressing my feelings to in the moment. My mind, body, and soul are the tools that help me deliver the message, tone, and realism that I produce. It brings out the raw, unreleased emotions that I have trouble just bluntly talking about. This is where my passion meets its purpose.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
LIGHTS! CAMERA! ACTION! My life is like a movie; it just keeps rolling like I’m on set. Occasionally I don’t know how I manage my load so well, but it’s definitely all worth it. Whether I’m in the studio making a hit record, behind the scenes as a radio host, podcasting, or even doing motivational life coaching, I’m always ready. I started my own business, ‘Ashley J Entertainment,’ in 2019, and years later I’m still learning. It requires a lot of my time and dedication, but I understand that anything fast doesn’t last. Balancing four different platforms is something I’m preparing to pay off in the long run. I’m proud of the entrepreneur I’ve developed myself into becoming because I’m a better decision-maker. With my experience, I’m aware of what holds value and how to generate revenue through my assets, resources, and relationships. “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know.”
My music sets me apart from any and everything around me. Music is my go-to, my therapy, and my daily escape from the world. I express my creative side through art to release my emotions. As a lyricist/songwriter, you have to have tough skin. Making music that people can resonate with is mentally challenging. I recently dropped my new album: Charge It 2 The Game (Part 2): The Sequel, which is a huge comeback project. With so much life happening in a four-year time span, my new album has been considered some of my greatest work of all time. My fans waited and stood by me during my time of isolation, and for that reason, I’m forever thankful. I had to give my true supporters something that was worth the anticipation. I got personal and deeper on this 10-track LP. Storytelling and realism are what I’m most known for. When I write songs, I like to be relatable so that my audience can have that connection with me. So, if you have love for hip-hop and listen to music with true substance, I am confident that my music is something you’d enjoy.
