Daily Inspiration: Meet Barbara Latta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Barbara Latta

Hi Barbara, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
As a southern girl growing up in a small town, I experienced culture shock after my husband and I married and moved to Houston, Texas. The big city’s exposure, especially driving in multi-lane interstate traffic, taught me more about independence and being willing to step out of my comfort zone.

After a few years my husband’s employer transferred us to Utah, then Wyoming. The adjustment to another climate and the separation of hundreds of miles from family promoted some fears and at times despair. My husband was also a Navy reservist which required some active duty time overseas. He was stationed in Saudi Arabia for a year, where I couldn’t go. But later he was deployed to England, and I was able to join him there. These orders led us to trips in several countries and opened my eyes to other parts of the world. I have had the privilege of traveling to England, Scotland, Germany, Belgium, France, and Cuba. We also resided in South Korea for two years. I will be eternally grateful for that involvement as I learned so much about the Korean people, the Korean War, and their language and customs. We made many friends that we are still in contact with. We also have a son who lives in Hong Kong and my visit to him provided more education about that part of the world.

I never had worldwide travel on my bucket list, but I appreciate what this awareness has added to my life. I have been influenced in ways that have developed me as a person, a writer, and a Christian.

In between some of the overseas trips, my husband was employed in Washington, D.C. As a lover of history, I was fascinated with the museums and historical sites in the area. My favorite was Mount Vernon, the home of George Washington. We volunteered at this beautiful tourist attraction and mingled with the guests while dressed in the traditional revolutionary era garb. Not only was this fun and entertaining, it provided more knowledge of America’s founding history, and added to my learning resume’.

My interest in writing stems back to my childhood, but didn’t take root until my adult years. Through conferences, classes, and webinars, I continue to polish my skills and enjoy the education that brings me in contact with professionals. I have completed a Power Speaker Course through the Advanced Writers and Speakers Association which continues to grow my confidence and stretch me.

One of our favorite things to do is ride motorcycles. I ride on the back of my husband’s Harley Davidson three-wheeler and we enjoy many adventures together. These trips ignited an idea for a motorcycle devotional which was published in 2018.

We just celebrated our 49th anniversary and continue to enjoy life together along with our two sons, daughter-in-law, and granddaughter.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My biggest obstacle has been lack of confidence, as well as comparing myself to other people, and being willing to step into new territory with technology . The assistance I have received from mentors and from my relationship with God has given me the ability to pursue and overcome these challenges.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I seek to use my writing to inspire and motivate others, especially women. I created a blog several years ago and published a book for motorcycle riders. My writing has appeared in multiple articles in print and online, and in several compilations. Some of my articles have won writing awards.

What makes you happy?
Happiness is a decision we make. We all face circumstances that can challenge us and bring about difficult emotions. As a believer in God, I rely upon the Bible and live by this book’s precepts. When darkness threatens, I turn to the hope of heaven to draw me back into the light. No matter what I face, I can know the deep abiding joy of the Lord.
