Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittney Kenyetta.
Hi Brittney, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Dance was introduced to me through my mom in New York, which is originally where I am from. From there I fell in love with it. I started at the age of 5, doing the standard training and fun choreography you do in little tutus and jazz/ballet slippers. Just in my own little world. But as I got older, I developed more of an understanding of the art of dance , so it blossomed into a more passionate love I couldn’t ever part from. At 19, I even found the bravery enough to try out for the New York City Knicks for the first time ever! But when I didn’t make the team, I lost all of my confidence and light for dance and decided to take a long mental break from it.
When I came to Atlanta, I made it clear to myself that I would rediscover that passion I had and go back to remembering why I fell in love with dance in the first place. I found inspiration in my friends from home as well as my new friends in ATL, art, being in a new city and videos on social media. From there I came across studios and choreographers that helped me tap into my feminine, masculine, broadway, actress and even smoother sides. Pretty much the basics were fed to me again. I even was introduced to HEELS. I never thought I’d be similar to inspirations like Joie Chavis and Aliya Janell, yet here I am taking classes from them and keeping up.
I am currently experiencing tour shows with artists like Tiffany Evans, rehearsals, great connections and showing off my confidence I thought I lost for good. I’m also happy to announce that I’m officially moving back home to New York City to train as a dancer and explore who I am back in my city. I’m excited.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely not! For starters, my personal life was complicated at a point and as I was pursuing something I loved, I was dealing painfully with relationship issues, feeling unsupported and feeling alone while doing it. I also struggled with perfectionism and was really hard on myself during my journey and training when I should’ve showed myself more grace.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a professional dancer. I’m a huge HEELS/STILETTOS girly but I also dabble in Hip Hop. I’m most proud of so far becoming a dancer in Tiffany Evans “WOULD YOU” Music Video, as well as my experience as a back up dancer in her live shows.
Personally what sets me apart is my ability to tap into the dance world in two different cities which means broader opportunity to explore different styles, genres, cultures, etc in the dance world.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
Creative Rental Space in Atlanta is where I really got to explore a beautiful environment and I sincerely got to experience amazing choreographers, professionalism and good friends. Plus they’re sponsored by REDBULL so free Redbulls! But also all of my dance girl friends that I have became friends with during my journey that are still by my side. Also thank you LadyLines Heels and ANightInHeels for helping me really tap in and still supporting me OUTSIDE of the studio. They never faked the funk and always were truly true to their art as well as being a person that checks in and remembers who you are
