Today we’d like to introduce you to CDK on the mic.
Hi CDK on the mic, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
All throughout my childhood, I was always either on stage or in front of the camera. I learned that acting was something I was really passionate about at about the age of eight years old. Auditioning for commercials and doing stage plays that was cool, but I didn’t really find my talent until the church gave me my first voice being the master of ceremonies every youth Sunday. Fast forward to the summer before I found out not only my why but fell into my calling, which is Hosting. July 19th, 2017, “CDK on the mic” was born. Starting my official journey in the clubs doing parties. I then continued to elevate my brand, transitioning to hosting all the campus events at North Carolina A&T. I quickly began to pick up buzz, opening the door to getting booked at other HBCUs around the state of North Carolina. This led me to being presented the opportunity to become an intern at 102 Jamz in the promotions department. Just four months later, I was offered a position as an On-Air personality. That same year I got nominated for “Radio Personality of the Year.” Following my tenure at 102 Jamz I was put in a position to push myself to the next level landing an internship with Warner Music Group, where I’m currently employed as a College Marketing Rep. In between that time I was voted “The #1 HBCU Host.” Being recognized for all the work I put into creating an experience at HBCUs around the nation.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I wouldn’t be who I am today if I didn’t go through anything, right? Thanking God for putting me in the position to be uncomfortable. Beginning in my childhood, I always struggled academically, not understanding why until we discovered that I had Attention deficit disorder. I was determined to not let that put a holt on my dreams to become the superstar that I’m destined to be. Knowing this, one of the things I’m most proud of is becoming a first-generation college student, creating that path for my little brother to follow in my footsteps, moving forward to one of my most recent struggles losing my job in radio due to the pandemic, literally being forced to change my entire way of living. The radio brought me to a place of peace and happiness, especially the remotes portion of it. When that was taken away from me so abruptly it made me reevaluate my entire career.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I originally gained a heavy support base from all the crazy stunts I pulled during events. My signature was crowd surfing to the point that people used to hold their hands up when certain songs came on, waiting for me to launch myself into the crowd. One of the most memorable moments is when I got into a cage that hung over a crowd of 1000+ people counting down to homecoming it was something that’s never been done before. In today’s time, I’ve recently gained recognition for my podcast “The Sad Boy Saga,” where we speak on mental health as well as pop culture and sports. Outside of that, I do celebrity interviews that have picked up major traction from major record labels and media outlets. Thus far the biggest accomplishment, without a doubt, is becoming The #1 Ranked HBCU Host in the nation. This has given me the platform to travel all over America, showing my talents as an event host, radio personality, and public figure being the face of the HBCU community. An0ther huge accomplishment was hosting for Floyd Money Mayweather during the all-star week!
Risk-taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Always bet on yourself. Rather than be investing time or money, you can always fall back on YOU!
