Today we’d like to introduce you to Christian Wilson.
Hi Christian, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started my photography and videography career in 2019. It really started as a fun hobby as I always enjoyed turning events into a movie like production. Watching videos and looking at photos always became a relaxing thing for me. One of the true moments where I can clear my mind and focus on the screen. Fast Forward – Over the years I slowly increased my skills by upgrading cameras, acquiring higher level clients, making several different published magazines, and eventually where I am today capturing some of the most well-known weddings on the internet.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I would ultimately say it has been fairly smooth in the aspect of not worrying about money. I also work a 9-5 which is for a start-up company as well. So technically, I am doing two start-ups at once. So, I never really stressed the aspect of the photography business due to being able to provide for my family off of my 9-5. I can say trying to gain clientele and the commitment to constantly promote, market, and learn can become exhausting. You are your business and the only way people know who you are is by putting yourself out there. That can come in a positive way or a negative way unfortunately. My company is run on “Positive energy only” at all times. So, if couples or clients bring a certain energy that I feel doesn’t fit the energy of the company – I have surely denied shoots.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My day to day life consists of Database Scripting, Coding, Photography, and Project Managing. I work in the healthcare realm in regards to my 9-5 so I tend to bounce around learning different aspects of healthcare to eventually try and know 90% of it in full. I treat photography the same way. Trying to learn angles, body types poses, etc.
I feel what sets me apart from others is how outgoing I am. I am not a person to shy away from conversation and show folks who I am. I believe what I am known for is the positive energy I bring no matter the event or the people I am around. One comment I hear often is how within the first 30 seconds of meeting the bridesmaids and groomsmen – I can immediately relate to their personalities. This allows for comfortability in front of the camera as well as having fun as you feel a friend is taking the picture. The thing I am most proud of is where everything is today for PEO. Starting from begging to get a wedding to now having to deny weddings to maintain a life is a blessing. Then wedding grew to engagement shoots, high-level events, maternity shoots, etc. Truly a blessing.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I feel a lot of it has been good luck. I was able to work an event called Diner En Blanc where its invite only and 95% of the people there are entrepreneurs. When capturing the event and posting the videos and photos – that’s when everything started to grow. Wedding planners, Gym Owners, Event Specialists, etc. All of them were there – requesting to gather information for more work. From that moment forward is when I started to invest in better equipment/try to find a small team to be able to do more than a one-man job level of work.
