Today we’d like to introduce you to Craig Henry.
Hi Craig, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’m Craig, most people know me as @TheTravelJunkee. I’ve been at this travel thing for over 30 years now, and I’ve managed to hit six continents, more than 81 countries, and honestly, I’ve lost count of the cities. Travel isn’t just a hobby for me, it’s my passion.
Funny thing is, it all started way back in the early ’70s. My parents took us on a family trip to Disneyland, our first real vacation that didn’t mean staying with relatives. I can still remember boarding the plane in Chicago, being handed a blanket by the flight attendant, and holding my brother’s hand when we hit turbulence. For a kid, Anaheim felt like another planet, and that trip lit a spark in me that never went out.
Now fast-forward to today, I’ve built a life around that spark. I run TheTravelJunkee and THETRAVELJUNKEES LLC, where I share stories, tips, and hidden gems from around the globe. Like if you’re in Rome, I’ll point you to Gregory’s Jazz Club by the Spanish Steps—it’s the perfect spot for live jazz. Or if you’re in Lisbon, I’ll tell you about a little neighborhood where you can only get to by Tuk Tuk, but trust me, the food is unforgettable.
Outside of travel, I’ve got a few businesses, real estate investments scattered around the world, and yeah, I like to shoot a little pool when I can. But honestly, what excites me most is hopping on a plane with little notice and just going.
I haven’t been everywhere yet, but believe me, it’s all on the list. And chances are, by the time you’re reading this… I’m already wheels up to the next adventure, heading to Taiwan and Philippines next week until end of Sept. Ciao
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
So far so good, not smooth everywhere but way more good times and good vibes than bad ya dig. One time in particular I can remember was being in Tanzania (Zanzibar) October 2020 not only were in the pandemic year, it was also their election time. Election night we were literally on lock down at the resort with strict instructions not to leave because locals were clashing with the police, and we could hear it all night long. What we were naive to think were mere fireworks going off was actually full blown rioting and fighting with the police and military. The next day on the way to airport, upon leaving the resort we saw burned out cars, buildings, and even a few bodies laying around, literally.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a senior program manager and have been for the past 20 years in the corporate setting. I’m also a part time entrepreneur running our travel business THETRAVELJUNKEES LLC, where we specialize in taking clients all around the globe for fantastic adventures.
We specialize in Maximizing Memories
How do you think about happiness?
That’s easy, going to the airport and getting on a plane. It’s like a hit of dopamine for real. I absolutely LOVE to travel. I also love train rides in other countries.
