Daily Inspiration: Meet David Velick

Today we’d like to introduce you to David Velick.

David Velick

Hi David, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My filmmaking story started in high school. I was nearing graduation and had to take some electives courses. There wasn’t much to choose from but video production was on the list so I signed up, not really knowing or caring at the time what it was because I just wanted to graduate. About 3-4 weeks into the course, I had fallen hard for video production and all the applications and nuances that go along with creating videos from the lighting to the editing. This seemingly unimportant elective class at the time set the foundation for where I am today as a filmmaker.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road to what you want is never a smooth or easy ride. I have had numerous challenges in my career up until now including long dry spells of no work forcing me into homelessness and having to start from the ground up once I landed in Atlanta. And I will most likely have more challenges in the future but they will be nothing that I can’t handle.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I currently work in the filmmaking/tv as a cinematographer, gaffer, and grip. I most recently was on a Spanish TV spot that has been nominated for an Emmy so I am very excited to see if myself and the team I worked with win in the category. I believe what sets me apart from others is my passion for the details. I am a planner. So I do my best to have as many things lined up/solidified before stepping foot onto a set to ease the stress as much as possible so that I and others can enjoy the ride.

What matters most to you? Why?
What matters most to me is to keep it simple, to slow down, and enjoy what’s being created around you. I sometimes find myself getting so caught up in the how and the what that I forget that most of that doesn’t actually matter. What will matter is what connections you made with your fellow brothers or sisters, and what you learned along the way that you can eventually share with inspiring individuals striving for the same role as you.
