Today we’d like to introduce you to Delaney Williams.
Hi Delaney, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I consider my creative career to be a legacy one- my dad is a graphic designer, my grandfather was an illustrator at heart, and I’ve heard more stories about the innovators in my ancestry than I can count. It still took me a few years to find my way into the artistic side of life, and longer after that to realize it could become a viable career. Eventually, though, SCAD became the only college I ended up applying to, which is where I discovered how broad and wonderful the professional creative community can be. Now, four years later as a soon-to-be grad, I’m a proven illustrator and designer ready to fully join Atlanta’s hub of creative professionals.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, it has not been smooth, but I don’t think I would have wanted it to be. I’ve dealt with a lot of internal struggle with imposter syndrome, perfectionism, wishing I immediately had everything figured out, a lot of pressure to be constantly at the forefront of whatever I have set my mind to- but I am the artist that I am because of it. To me, the point of illustrating and designing in order to creatively present narratives to others is the human struggle, effort, and learning experience that went into making it. Would my art have the same soul if there were no bumps in its journey to existence?
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m an illustrator and designer. I’m more known for my illustration work, which is characterized my texture, intricate detail, organic shapes, and often fantastical flora and fauna. I feel that the way I illustrate sets me apart, as I haven’t met many fellow artists with a similar process: I plan my compositions and colors digitally, then transfer the layout to illustration board and render everything in ballpoint pen. Then, I scan it and add color digitally. I work this way because I enjoy the technique of ballpoint, and I love the feeling of completing a physical piece of artwork. Additionally, the texture that ballpoint creates is very unique, and I haven’t found another way to replicate it.
My design work is often focused more on largescale, made-for-client and/or advertising projects where I’m generally serving in a creative direction role. I love typography and still incorporating a bit of texture, even when I’m flexing my more minimalistic and strategic skill sets.
I’m the most proud of my ability to be versatile and adapt to complete whatever the creative need of a project ends up being. This is a skill I’ve learned through my internships and group projects over the past years, and it is invaluable as I begin my professional career.
What matters most to you?
Authenticity and originality. In this day and age, I really appreciate when people can be real and honest with each other.
