Today we’d like to introduce you to Derrick Hurley.
Hi Derrick, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started comedy in 2017 in Chicago. Started off doing open mics in the city, opening shows for more seasoned comedians, and guest spots here and there. Chicago gave me my foundation. If you make it there you can make it anywhere. I moved to Atlanta in 2019, here is where I strived to separate myself. And crafted my art over these years here into what I am today. Now six years later I’m on tour with My Cousin Tiera. We’ve been traveling the US hitting all the major comedy clubs and venues. This year was also my first time at Chocolate Sundaes LA. A goal of mine since I started comedy.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Not smooth at all, life happens. But you get back up, get back in that notepad and write. Use life and its events to craft jokes and bring it to the stage. Life is really a joke when you look at it. Think about this: two people in the 80s got together. Made me, now I’m here in the world against my will and I gotta pay bills? That’s crazy.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Here at D Hurl Comedy LLC, I specialize in the art of standup comedy. Displaying my gift at clubs around the US. I also have merchandise, t-shirts, hoody’s, joggers, bags you name it. Currently on tour with My Cousin Tiera. I also run a comedy night at Perfect Note ATL. I host and book comedians for the comedy shows.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Being humble, willing to learn, and hungry for success. Never lost that hunger I had when I was asking people to do comedy on their stages. And giving back to others that’s huge. God said if you got it, give it. So I do.
