Daily Inspiration: Meet Destiny Momodu

Today we’d like to introduce you to Destiny Momodu.

Hi Destiny, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Many know me by Lew world or just Lew a 22 years old visual / tattoo artist from the west side of Atlanta, Georgia. I’ve been drawing since I can remember, my mother loves to brag and say three but I’ve taken being a Visual artist seriously maybe three years now, I started tattooing in July 2020 in my ex boyfriend sister living room, After quitting my job during the pandemic due to the company cutting my pay check and some of the other employees as well, I’ve always had the idea of being an art teacher or maybe even going into art therapy but school didn’t work out as I planned, I’m now tattooing at a shop called prajket ink I’ve been in the shop almost since I started I found out about prajket through a known artist on Instagram he was offering to teach people how to tattoo I was already getting the groove of tattooing but it wouldn’t hurt to get more knowledge it was 1000’s throwing their hands up in the comments saying “me me me” seeing that somewhat triggered my anxiety but I wasn’t going to pass the opportunity I direct messaged “chad”, the tattoo artist offering help, sent some of the beginner work I was doing and hoping for the best, the next morning his assistant hit me back and prajket has been my tattoo family sense then.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I’ve come to learn that no road is necessarily smooth sailing but I can’t complain cause the journey itself has been rewarding. Once I tapped more into being a creator, my free time shrunk drastically which made the ones around me feel sort of strange I’d imagine. As I started to grow in tattooing, me and my ex-partner would fight more out of them not understanding that things for me are changing and I needed to stay more focused on my work, I’d see friends less and barely made it to family functions. Day in and day out nonstop, tattooing is like a different world of its own and it definitely can get chaotic long time foes looking to become friends, people finding interest in me for the wrong reasons, lovers not understanding your schedule, getting jealous due to the atmosphere, and family looking to spend the million before you can even make it. All in all, I’ll tell myself to stay grounded, stay true to you.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a visual artist and also a tattoo artist. I really see myself as a Visual artist more than anything, I feel as though tattooing is a plus like a hidden talent. Since the last time I did the Voyage interview, I was in the beginning stages of promoting myself as an artist and tattoo artist and so much has happened since then. I’ve been showcasing my artwork in many shows and live painting and tattooing at different venues. A few places I’ve showed work are “Future Art gallery”, “herb and color”, “Atlanta art events” hosted a sip and paint and I’ve recently been asked to show work at bonfire. As of right now, what I am most proud of is I recently had some artwork shown in a 21 savage music video “No Debate”, so that alone has really been an eye-opener. I feel like being myself is what sets me apart from others there’s no need for gimmicks and other illusions that I feel like people would like of me. My individuality is not necessarily what makes me different, me knowing I’m different and embracing it to its full potential is what sets me apart.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
In the next 5-10, yikes haha. I haven’t thought that far ahead as far as ten years. Within five, I’ll most likely still be tattooing but have a more established clientele and start traveling and by faith have artwork in shows out of state or hell even out of the country. I don’t see myself tattooing forever so at some point, I’m putting the machine down and maybe start a youth program for all art forms. I wasn’t into a lot of art programs in school as I should’ve been so I’d love to give different opportunities to younger artists no matter what the art form is.
