Today we’d like to introduce you to Devonte Chatman.
Hi Devonte, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m from Columbus, Ga born and raised. I am the proud owner of Dope King Cutz LLC. I started my barber journey roughly 10 years ago as hobby which then turned into a lifelong passion. I honestly used YouTube as a teaching tool and used my friends as models until I was comfortable with monetizing myself. I bounced from around to a few shops until I got the opportunity to operate in my own space. I view cutting hair as an art form. I honestly believe developing that particular skill saved my life and provided me the ability to provide for my children.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I never attended barber school so everything that I have learned I’ve done by myself. I used to drive store-to-store to deliver business cards to promote myself. At first, I even gave free haircuts to people just for an opportunity to showcase my work.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a barber. What sets me apart from everyone else is my passion and love I have for what I do. I truly love each and every one of my clients and I’m willing to go beyond the call of duty to make sure they are satisfied with their haircut
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
Expanding and growing. The hair industry has supported the black community through the Great Depression and the pandemic. Barber are pillars of the community
