Daily Inspiration: Meet Dexter Tolson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dexter Tolson.

Hi Dexter, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started playing piano as a kid and moved through a few instruments. I stopped for a while and started back up when I was 29 when I picked up a sax book and started learning from there.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, because I was self-taught. You tend to think you’re doing everything correctly when you’re self-taught because you have to unlearn some things and have learning gaps.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a retired army vet. I specialized in nuclear missiles, transportation, petroleum, and leadership instruction. I’m proud of the fact that I was able to retire when I wasn’t even going to enlist. I’m very disciplined, punctual, and work-oriented as a musician. That’s important when in this industry.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
Playing outside with my brother and my friends in Baltimore.
