Daily Inspiration: Meet DJ Burn One

Today we’d like to introduce you to DJ Burn One.

Hi DJ Burn One, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I got a computer early in high school, found out how to download music through AOL chat rooms before Napster and would burn mixtapes to sell at school. I’d take the top 8 songs from Greg Street’s top 8 at 8, burn them on a cd and sell them at school. From there, I got a job at a mom and pop cd store named Super Sounds. a guy came in and asked me why I didn’t try releasing a real mixtape like DJ Drama and so I tried it. I went from releasing mixtapes in high school to talking Gucci Mane into doing his first mixtape (Chicken Talk), tour DJing and eventually A&R’ing for Bubba Sparxxx and his label New South, internet marketing for Rowdy Records (Da Backwudz album) and eventually progressed into producing (A$AP Rocky’s Houston Old Head/Roll One Up, Lil Durk ft. Nicki Minaj – Extravagant, Jidenna – Tribe to name a few) along with engineering/mixing/mastering. I discovered Pi’erre Bourne at SAE and signed him to my Five Points Music Group as a producer before he made Magnolia for Playboi Carti. More recently, I’ve gotten into the education world by providing the curriculum that the University of Illinois School of Music created a new class around named Music Monetization 499 and I’m a guest lecturer at Kennesaw State University Joel A. Katz Music & Entertainment Business Program.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Of course not. I’ve had the blessing/curse of being super early on things which can be a problem. Basically, finding talent, helping them make it and having them not reach their hand back to put you in a better position is what happens more often than not. I don’t let it affect my love for the game though. What’s meant for me shall be is the motto I’ve always believed in.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Myself and my team The Five Points Bakery have a slogan “Foreign to the ear, familiar to the spirit.” We always want to create music that feels nostalgic, something that feels like you heard it before. But haven’t. We were one of the first crew’s creating original samples for other producers. We specialize in live instrumentation that sounds like samples. We’re known for a funky, hard-hitting southern sound. One of the things I’m most proud of is years ago, I set a goal to have a song in a movie, a video game, a soundtrack and a Netflix show. We did it all within a few years. We made the first song on the Superfly movie reboot soundtrack that came out a few years ago (Sleepy Brown ft. Scar – If You Want It), we got a beat in the NBA2K19 game and also made it in the Iron Fist show on Netflix. On top of that, we did some sound design for the 1917 and Justice League movie trailers which was super cool. What sets us apart is how we’re such students of the game mixed with how all of our sounds melt together. Our squad is myself. Walt Live, Go! Ricky Go! and Anna Valena.

What were you like growing up?
I’ve always been a curious, technologically inclined person. I played sports and listened to tons of music and watched lots of movies. My dad used to always tell me its better to have a friend than an enemy so I was pretty cool with everyone.
