Daily Inspiration: Meet DJ Khaleesi

Today we’d like to introduce you to DJ Khaleesi.

DJ Khaleesi

Hi DJ, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
The shorty story is, I’ve always loved music. From chorus, to band, to high-school DJ, to mixtape curator to dancer to DJ was my progression if you were to put it on a graph.

I became a DJ at 50. As a gift to myself and encouraged by many of my friends along the way.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has been a very long road for me. The seed had been planted for so many decades, but between life, fear & imposter syndrome it would take a long time to grow.

I think the greatest struggle was overcoming all of the reasons why I COULDN’T DO IT. I don’t have the time right now. The energy. The money, the music, the support. All of those voices kept me stuck for ages.

Friends offered to help, let me practice. One friend let me hold his decks for a few months during Covid. I never even opened the case. What I learned about myself in this process is – I am a hands on leaner. Show me, don’t tell me vibes.

At the end of 2023 I went to a vision board party. I didn’t realize it until later, but I added a mixing board to it.

By April I was in DJ Skyywalker’s class learning the decks. In May I played my first rooftop party.

The greatest thing was overcoming my own fears.
All of the pieces fell into place after that.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I identify as Frequenseer, aka DJ. I specialize in Tribal and Afro House, Deep House, Disco, AfroBeats & world music. I enjoy playing music people haven’t heard before, but will vibe with. I am known for taking people on musical journeys with tracks from all over the world.

I am most proud when people come and tell me how much they enjoyed my sets. That they felt like they were on vacation. Because that is always my goal.

I aim to take people away from the ‘here’ for a few hours. Let them feel free in the music and equalize their nervous systems through sound.

Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My favorite childhood memory is a vacation I took with my father. He picked me up in his 1983 BMW that smelled of cigarettes because he chain smoked. We took a road trip from Berlin to Stetin (then the capital of Poland). From there we went to a small island camping for a week.

That was the most magical week of my life. I slept by myself outside in a tent. There was 1 farmer on the island who provided our fresh milk every day. I learned to fish from a canu that summer. I leaned how to build a fire & read the stars. I swam without fear in the dark lake at night, because I hadn’t seen any horror movies yet. My Dad even built me an outhouse (I helped), because there were no bathrooms and I refused to poop in the bushes.

One day while fishing, he took us down a narrow side canal on the canu. Suddenly we were surrounded by all colors and sizes of dragonflies. It was like a movie. A most magical time I’ll always keep with me.

My father passed from cancer not long after. I’ll always be grateful for the magic he shared with me.
