Daily Inspiration: Meet Dorothy Pinney

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dorothy Pinney.

Hi Dorothy, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
It’s hard to believe January will mark 20 years that I’ve been in the hair industry. I started as an apprentice in 2002 in Dunwoody, quickly going onto the floor as a hairstylist, in 2005 in moved to Grow Salon and added coloring to my service list. Once fully booked there, I made the leap to booth rent at Dada Salon in Inman Park. From there, I left with a co-worker and we opened our own salon where I’m now located on Waddell St. In 2018, our building was in a fire, while closed I bought out my partner and reopened Smith Ivey in early 2019.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It’s been both. I’ve been so fortunate to have amazing clients and the best co-workers a stylist could want. The fire in 2018 was a setback, the salon was closed for five months so we all had to work elsewhere while it was rebuilt. Honestly dealing with Covid as a business owner has been quite stressful. Navigating the comfort levels of all my staff and our customers has been tough, hopefully we are close to the other side of this thing.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I love both cutting and coloring. It’s nice to do both so you can work with your client through the whole experience. I enjoy doing natural color on my clients. I have a large group of clients that are coming in for gray coverage and also really enjoy a very natural highlight on clients. I see both men and women in the salon and am comfortable with short woman’s styles as well.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I believe I lucked out and worked at a few salons that were quite popular at the time. That made getting new clients easier than I’m sure some have it. But I think my hard work at keeping them as clients and getting referrals has been my success.
