Daily Inspiration: Meet Dr. Tamika Head

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Tamika Head.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Pink STEM began as a research paper while I was still in school. One of my professors challenged us to choose a topic that was personally meaningful, and as a single mother raising a daughter, I wanted to find a way to pass on the legacy of my own career. I had served as an Air Traffic Controller and Respiratory Therapist in the United States Air Force and later became an Honors Chemistry and Physics teacher and a Robotics Coach. I wanted my daughter to see that these careers were not only possible for her, but that they were a part of her inheritance.

That research evolved into the creation of the Pink STEM Foundation, grounded in data, lived experience, and my goals at the time as a classroom teacher. I spent eight years teaching both middle and high school students, and I saw firsthand the gaps in exposure, access, and representation for girls and minorities in STEM. Since then, I’ve had two more daughters with my husband, which has only strengthened my commitment and sense of purpose. Today, Pink STEM represents my continued drive to open doors, create pathways, and intentionally introduce girls and underrepresented communities to STEM careers so they can see themselves in these fields long before someone tells them they don’t belong.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
As the founder of the nonprofit Pink STEM Inc., some of the biggest obstacles and struggles include securing consistent and sustainable funding while balancing the mission with the realities of financial operations. There is often the challenge of wearing multiple hats—serving simultaneously as executive director, program developer, fundraiser, marketer, and sometimes even program staff—which can lead to burnout and limited capacity. Building credibility and trust with funders, partners, and stakeholders, especially in highly technical and male-dominated STEM spaces, can require extra effort and persistence. Navigating compliance, reporting requirements, and administrative responsibilities tied to grants, contracts, and nonprofit regulations also adds complexity and time demands. Additionally, scaling programs without losing quality, managing partnerships with varying expectations, and advocating for equity and access in systems that were not originally designed to support underrepresented groups in STEM can be both emotionally and strategically challenging.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a former US Air Force Air Traffic Controller, Respiratory Therapist and Middle and High School Teacher. I have used all of my skills to teach the basics of Chemistry and Physics to students to get them excited about careers in Aviation and Aerospace. My work history and professional background includes experience as an Air Traffic Controller, a Respiratory Therapist, and a former teacher, giving me a unique blend of high-pressure operational expertise, healthcare knowledge, and education experience. Across these roles, I’ve developed strong skills in communication, leadership, training, and problem-solving—ranging from managing complex airspace and ensuring safety in aviation, to providing critical patient care in respiratory health, and supporting student learning and development in the classroom. This diverse career path reflects my ability to adapt across industries while staying grounded in service, precision, and impact.
