Hi Dwayne, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I am a visionary multimedia artist whose diverse creations seamlessly blend elements of wood, electrical components, epoxy, and various other mediums. Born in the vibrant landscapes of Guyana, South America, my artistic journey is deeply rooted in the rich cultural tapestry of my upbringing.
Having served in the U.S. Air Force, my disciplined background finds an unexpected and inspiring outlet in my artistic endeavors. My military precision aligns well with my creative expression and I enjoy incorporating natural elements into captivating works of art. I aim to create harmony with structure and fluidity in my pieces from my unique perspective.
My academic achievements include a Bachelor of Science in Management Information Systems and an MBA with a specialization in International Business. These credentials reflect my analytical mindset and strategic approach, which influence my artistic process. My technical proficiency, honed through years as an IT Consultant in the corporate realm, has seamlessly integrated into my artistic practice, resulting in works that marry craftsmanship with cutting-edge technology.
After creating several pieces and completing many creative projects for family and friends, I decided to set up a formal art studio, Dsigned68 (a.k.a. D68) to bring more visibility to my work. My creations are inspired by the intersection of culture, technology, and nature, and resonate with a sense of purpose and harmony. My use of wood, carefully shaped and sometimes combined with electrical components, introduces a dynamic energy to my pieces. The incorporation of epoxy further elevates my work, capturing the essence of fluidity and transformation.
My hope is that my pieces invite viewers to explore my craftsmanship and the narratives hidden within each piece. Beyond the tangible forms, I aim to provoke thought and evoke emotions, creating an immersive experience for those who engage with my work.
As an artist who has navigated both the corporate and creative realms, I know I bring a unique perspective to the art world. My journey from the military to the boardroom, and now into the realm of multimedia art, has been a wonderful evolution and I hope it continues to captivate audiences worldwide. I have an unwavering commitment to pushing the boundaries of traditional art, and I want art lovers to embark on a visual journey that transcends conventional expectations with my work.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has not been a smooth road. I am constantly learning my craft and how I want to fit into the artist world. There is a learning curve and I have grown to appreciate the power of networking. The artist world is still very traditional in nature. With my IT and digital background my work definitely leans more non-traditional so I am constantly working to carve out a niche for myself within the realm.
What matters most to you? Why?
Creating work that transcends space, time and emotions. Work that speaks to people and cultural nuances. My lived experience through military life, being an IT consultant and traveling and exploring the world for leisure has been a melting pot of cultural meetings and relationships. This drives my need to tell stories that have not been told mainstream by a unique Caribbean artist.
