Today we’d like to introduce you to Ebony Kim.
Hi Ebony, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I am a motion graphic designer, Ebony Kim. I mainly worked on adding animation to digital- drawing 2D and 3D illustrations, and these days I am trying to focus more on illustration.
If I were to talk about the reason why I started art, my family and I used to visit museums and art galleries since I was young, and I naturally became interested in it. My older sister also works as an illustrator, and my mother had participated in many art exhibitions. Pretty sure their support in allowing me to fully immerse myself in art was the biggest factor in my interest in art.
I had the opportunity to choose the USA among other countries, so I majored in motion graphics at SCAD. I gained valuable experience during the pandemic by working remotely for a USA design studio and creating logo animations for a friend’s business. Since then, I have graduated.
And right now, I am currently focusing on improving my professional skills and personal work while working on freelancing. And try to get more great – designer – attention on social media like Instagram and TikTok.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
If my life had been a smooth road, I would still have faced some challenges along the way. One of the main hurdles I encountered was overcoming the language barrier when moving to a new country. This made it difficult for me to communicate effectively with others and fully immerse myself in the local culture.
Additionally, as I pursued my passion for design in this challenging environment, I found myself struggling to determine my true interests in the field. This uncertainty caused me to experience a period of trial and error as I explored different aspects of design to discover where my strengths and passions lay. Despite these challenges, I persevered and continued to work hard, gaining valuable experience and insights along the way that have helped me grow both personally and professionally.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialized in creating 2D & 3D illustrations, storyboards, style frames, and other design assets to make a great animated- video. With my expertise and experience, I have developed exceptional attention to detail and a natural talent for bringing other people’s ideas and stories to life. I find nothing more rewarding than collaborating with people and working together to turn their concepts into reality. It’s a joy to be able to visualize their stories and help them achieve their goals through visual design.
When asked about my most significant accomplishment, I would have to say it was my senior project called “The Way.” The project required a lot of hard work, dedication, and creativity from myself and my team, and I am incredibly proud of what we were able to achieve. Throughout the project, we spent countless hours brainstorming ideas, creating storyboards, and developing characters, drawing inspiration from a wide range of sources such as animals. In the end, we created a unique and compelling story with a memorable main character who was a deer-human hybrid.
A little specialty from me, I am working on projects, and I love to explore new techniques and styles, experimenting with different mediums and approaches to see what works best for me. Sometimes I’ll work on a series of illustrations that revolve around a particular theme or idea, while at other times I’ll simply let my intuition guide me and see where the process takes me.
Additionally, I enjoy reading as a way to unwind and explore new ideas. NOT A BOOK NEEDED, enjoy reading whatever you are attracted to. I usually go for books that really get my gears turning or make me see things in a new light. I think It’s a great way for me to stay interested and curious about the world.
How do you define success?
In my opinion, success as a designer means having a recognizable style and being known for your creative and innovative work. It feels like It’s important to strive to improve skills and push the boundaries of what you can achieve as a designer, challenging yourself to create new and unique designs that stand out from the crowd.
