Today we’d like to introduce you to Elliott Young.
Hi Elliott, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’m originally from Cincinnati, OH. My interest in the dramatic arts stems from childhood, but my decision to prioritize it as a life profession began during college at Wright State University. I consider this period a defining time in my life because that’s when my direction became aligned with my passion. Upon graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Communication Studies and a minor in African-American Studies, I returned to my hometown, where my main objective was to continue honing my craft.
Within that era, I continuously performed in plays and completed training at an institution entitled TTI (Theatre Training Institute). In the summer of 2021, I moved to Atlanta, GA. Since then, I’ve acted in a number of stage and film credits in the region as I continue my journey.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I don’t believe anything worthwhile in life comes with an easy road. Some of the most fulfilling blessings we’re gifted require a fight against adversity and the necessary determination to stay planted in your vision when challenges arise. When I first moved to Atlanta, I didn’t even have a place to stay, but I knew a change was needed to accommodate my personal goals. On the strength of finding employment first, I confidently relocated by giving myself a month to settle, and that’s exactly what I did.
My foundation was my faith, an awareness of my potential, and the inner freedom to allow my passion to be my direction. As a result, I’ve been able to keep building relationships and credits in this market.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m an actor, and if I had to answer what my “specialty” is, I’d have to say bringing sincerity to whatever role I’m invested in. Whether it’s dramatic or comedic, a statement piece or pure entertainment, I’m someone who puts care into making sure audiences view and feel my commitment to the work.
My love for theatre is directly linked to that desire. Stage work often demands emotionally taxing devotion and delivery because the goal is to create a communal experience of shared vulnerability. Some of my proudest work to date comes from those experiences, and I try to transfer the same energy to other mediums where I can practice my craft.
On those grounds, what I hope continues to stand out about me is consistency, and that I don’t believe in mailing in the moment.
Some of the work I’ve been able to do during my time in Atlanta are plays like “Fences”, “The Voices of Donny Hathaway”, “Skeleton Crew”, “Lorraine”, and “The Face of Emmett Till”. In film, I’ve appeared in “Dirty Game 2”, “Friends Like Sisters”, and “Gotcha” among others. I’m thankful to God for what has transpired so far and what will come in the future.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I’m big on books. My two most important sources of self-identity are my spiritual groundedness and my awareness of where I come from. Therefore, I’m always working on being more diligent about having a relationship with the Word of God, and when it comes to books about my cultural heritage, the shoulders we stand on, and so forth, there are too many to name. There is a book that captures the concept of reinvention and perpetual growth as a thinker, doer, and achiever that I love. That book is “The Autobiography of Malcolm X”. It’s a book that seems to trigger new thoughts about self-discovery with every visit. I’m always inspired by it.
