Daily Inspiration: Meet Ethan Senger

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ethan Senger.

Hi Ethan, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was born into a musical family. My father’s father was a jazz guitarist, and my father played guitar as well. I was captivated by the big amps as a little kid and the rumble that would hit my chest when my dad would play. My mother is also a great singer and taught me how to use my ear to sing in key. From there, it sparked an interest and passion early on in my life. My parents, I thought, had good taste in music. I loved what I got to listen to while growing up. From a young age, I adored bands like U2, Van Halen, Journey, The Police, and so many more. I remember seeing live concerts on VHS or YouTube when I was about five years old and totally falling in love with the thought of playing big shows with all this energy that the performer and the crowd shared. When I was seven, I got involved with the School of Rock in Buckhead, GA. There, I learned how to play guitar outside of already being self-taught, and played my first show with a band when I was seven years old.

From then on, I never put the guitar down or stopped singing. I was with the School of Rock for a few more years, gathering great experience. When I was 15, I made up my mind about playing music as a career. My mom started taking me to open mics, where I would cover John Mayer songs and just anything else I knew how to play. I found out that I could make money by playing other people’s music at gigs. It has been a great discovery for me, and I’ve been able to support myself financially doing it. Now, I’m transitioning into being an artist, focused on releasing my own music. With my second EP set to be released soon, my primary focus is to become a touring artist. I enjoy the process of making music and have always loved playing live.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Music/entertainment is a weird job because your hours are different from a regular day job, and the days you’re working are when everyone else is off. I’ve been lucky to have incredibly supportive parents, friends, and family, so no obstacles there. It can get scary, though, trying to stay booked to keep the bills paid, but I’ve learned to manage it. One of the biggest obstacles for me is time management. It is very easy to get consumed by distractions, and I’d be lying if I said I’m not distracted at times. I just recorded my new EP, which will be released soon. The title, Standing Still, is a representation of being stagnant in life and my music career due to fears of failing and succumbing to distractions.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I would say I’m known for strong, passionate, live performances. After all, it is my favorite part of being a musician and is the only thing that I’m truly in the moment while doing it. I’m very proud of the work I’ve put in to be able to support myself fully as a musician and artist. I’m also lucky to be in a time in the world where there’s so many outlets to make things happen for yourself in this industry.

How do you think about happiness?
Music makes me happy. It truly captivated me as a very young child. To this day, it hasn’t lost an ounce of its effect. Whether it’s discovering a new artist or writing a new song of my own, I think it makes me happy because it truly feels like peace of mind to me.
