Daily Inspiration: Meet Fatimah Muhammad

Today we’d like to introduce you to Fatimah Muhammad.

Hi Fatimah, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I have always had an interest in being expressive with alchemy such as essential oils. I had been making scrubs and skin care products for years. As I began to learn more about dieting, veganism and learning about how the industry creates products that can be harmful to both humans and animals, I knew it was my divine right to find some better products to aid myself and others. I began by becoming an understudy to a woman who was a family friend and a holistic healer. She helped me to understand the products that I most fell in love with which were essential oils. Thus, various healers around my city began to support me in my process and gave me free materials to learn from. Once I learned you can truly heal certain skin conditions, I began to curate particular items. As I was sharing some of my art with people I was deeply encouraged by someone to sell my products and from then on I began creating my business. Covid-19 kicked in and really challenged me to go full throttle with my business.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The process was smooth starting off. I hit the ground running. I had been invited with open arms to be in British Vogue and radio stations. I had some challenges with figuring out how to package and ship certain items. There are many items that I learned are better off being sold locally than nationally. I had to learn the seasons of when to send certain products and I also was met with challenges of products not being available due to them being sold out during COVID. I have also had challenges with labels and not being able to get my products created on time due to other sellers. Then there are challenges of having some months being better than others as far as customers go.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am the CEO and sole creator at Crowned Complexion. I make all the products by hand. I have help in regard to marketing and photographing the products. However, I am very firm in ensuring I use quality ingredients that are either vegan or cruelty free. I think what sets me apart is that I believe in energy. I only make my skin, hair, and beard products when I’m in a joyful place. I believe that energy transcends into the products and to the customer. I believe Crowned Complexion is unique in that we also cater to the men and to our people. We are very conscious of how we celebrate our people by how we market. Our content is strategically curated to share nothing but beautiful pictures of our people. We believe that image is important and so is health.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love Atlanta because this is the one place I feel at home in my skin. I have created a great network of people who look like me. I have been able to work for and with mostly African American people and it has been so freeing. Representation is so important as I do not have to worry about how my hair looks or what I am wearing. What I least like about Atlanta is that everything seems to be in one place. The city is not as diverse or spread out to hang out in various locations. I also wish there were more museums or pop-up art installations. I feel like we are limited to the type of entertainment that we can partake in.
