Today we’d like to introduce you to Han (Anderson) Yang.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I am an FX artist from Taiwan with a dream of doing visual effects in Hollywood movies. I’m a current visual effects graduate student at Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD).
I have tried three different majors for seeking my career goal when I was a college student. In the beginning, I was major in Chinese Literature, but I found out that this was not what I wanted. Therefore, I took the university entrance exam again and applied Mass Communication as the major. In this period, There was an opportunity for joining a post-production studio as an intern. I saw animators doing their job during my internship and I realized doing animation is super interesting and cool. So, one year later after the internship, I decided to take the entrance exam again and applied the third university – Chinese Culture University to attend and chose Digital Media major for learning animation and visual effects.
During Digital Media major, I have learned not only the skills of doing animation but also video editing, film shooting and project management, and the most important thing – to market myself.
After graduated from university, I was really proactive to know and make friends who are working in the industry. I want to give a special thanks to Jacys Lin, who is a senior FX TD in Weta FX, and he also bulit his own studio in Taiwan – StealthWorks Taiwan. He taught me all the skills of doing visual effects without taking any benefits from me and even provided me freelance opportunities for making me collect experience.
I got the admission from SCAD last year for chasing my dream and I hope my dream would be came true.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Chasing dreams is definitely not a smooth road. I used to hear some people got hair loss because of stress but I don’t believe it until it happens on me… (don’t know whether to laugh or cry)
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am good at producing like explosions, water, destruction… etc., some visual effects like these based on physics. I believe that my personality of pursuing perfect helps me to be different from other FX artists, and I also love to teach people how to make visual effects, I’ve always found out and learned something during the teaching process.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
I am a person who really likes to solve puzzles, which makes me feel satisfied when I get the answers. Producing visual effects is similar to solving puzzles, I really enjoy it.
