Today we’d like to introduce you to Hannah Job.
Hi Hannah, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’m a project person, I always have some sort of idea I’m working on in my free time and I like having multiple creative outlets. So when the pandemic hit and I suddenly had all this time at home, I started getting into printmaking not realizing that a year later, I’d be creating my own brand. For a long time, I had wanted to try out linocut printing which is a really interesting process of carving a design in soft linoleum and rolling thin layers of ink over the design to create prints. I had a lot of fun learning the technique and it lead me to trying out other forms of printmaking which is how I found my way to screen printing. Once I got the hang of the screen printing process, I was able to print my designs on fabric which opened the door to apparel design.
As I continued to learn and come up with ideas, I started getting a lot of encouragement to sell my work and the more I looked into it the more excited I got about the idea of starting a business. And now I am the founder and creative behind The Sunday Studios!
I’ve had an amazing time figuring things out, testing designs, and learning what it means to run a small business. This has been the most fulfilling project I’ve started.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
For this being so new to me, I’d say it’s gone about as smoothly as I was expecting. I’ve gone through my fair amount of trial and error but I’ve decided figuring out what not to do can be just as valuable. Starting out, I was very intimidated by the business registration process, and to be honest I still am, legal documents make me sweat but it truly is a one step at a time process. Outside of that time management has been something I’m very mindful of and if I wasn’t I think things would not go as smoothly. Setting and promoting product launches not only involves you it involves your customers, so meeting those deadlines are important for showing your customers, even before they make a purchase, that you’re reliable. For me, this becomes an under promise and overdeliver scenario and that has its challenges but it’s more than worth it.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My goal with this brand is to follow my creative pull and make the things that I want to see out in the world. I pull a lot of inspiration from past eras and movements, the 90’s and pop art are big graphic inspirations of mine. The boldness of the 90’s and pop art’s clean lines are something I’d like to see carried throughout the brand. I think statements, and even art in some cases, are most powerful when they’re simple and direct. I think you can see how those ideals have resonated with me and influenced my work.
I’m very excited and proud for The Sunday Studios to be a woman-owned and operated small business. Representation and equity is something I’m passionate about and will always advocate for. Owning and running this business has been incredibly empowering and validating for me and I hope to help and become a resource to other young entrepreneurs.
I’m also very proud that all of the products sold by The Sunday Studios are designed and made in-house by me. I think that’s a key way that I’ve set this brand apart from others. There are days where my one bedroom apartment feels like it couldn’t get any smaller when I’m tripping over myself and the printing equipment while getting prepared for a launch, but I take a lot of pride in knowing that I personally designed and made every single thing that I sell.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
As far as the industry goes I hope to keep seeing the growing interest in supporting small brands and independent artists. I think over the last few years, and especially since the pandemic, people are more keen to find a new brand that they connect with and engage with the artist. Being able to follow and watch an artist grow their practice is not something that we get to see very often and I think people are excited to show their support. I think we’re going to be seeing a lot more independent and lesser known art, in any form, in our day to day lives and I’m very excited about that.
I’m very excited to get The Sunday Studios into the Atlanta streetwear community. I have my eye on a number of local artist markets that I’m hoping to be a part of in 2022 and I’d like to get the studio to a point where we’re able to do those kinds of events multiple times a month. Beyond that my biggest goal right now is to get The Sunday Studios into the Atlanta Streetwear Market. The designers and brands that are a part of that event are crazy talented and I’d be honored to join that list.
