Today we’d like to introduce you to Hannah Patterson
Hi Hannah, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My path to art was paved through cooking. In the kitchen I discovered my creative flow—a timeless space where my senses heightened, my mind quieted, and my artistic spirit was nurtured.
This eventually led me to explore other creative outlets, like floral and garden design, and eventually painting. I began experimenting with paint on scrap wood and cardboard I had on hand. Soon, daily sunset painting sessions in my backyard became a ritual and a sacred space where I connected with nature, de-stressed from my day, and re-entered that familiar creative flow.
Several years ago, an unexpected opportunity to create art for an HGTV show opened my eyes to the potential of turning my passion into a livelihood, and I started my art career.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road has been far from smooth, but no road in life truly is—we simply choose our hard. Initially, I was guarded with my art, shying away from any feedback, positive or negative. I feared that external judgments (and my own judgments) would taint the purity and freedom I found in creating if I let it in.
Over time, I reconnected to my student mindset, which is a core, authentic part of who I am, and opened myself to learning and feedback. This shift propelled my artistic growth, culminating in my first sales.
However, even with increased confidence, I still hesitated to put myself out there. I worried a lot about not being good enough. Additionally, I felt a ton of resistance around the marketing and business aspects of art.
I spent a lot of time soul searching to determine if living a creative life as an artist was truly the path I wanted for my career. I concluded that even if I never made money through my art again, I would always keep making it because I love it so much. With that clarity of purpose, I adopted the mantra “nothing to lose, nothing to prove,” which has allowed me to reconnect with that initial sense of flow, freedom, and playfulness. With this energy, I’ve been more successful than ever in my art career and I’m having a lot more fun too!
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m known for my unique approach to creating abstract paintings using naturally sourced materials, often incorporating found elements from nature and doing all my painting outside. If I discover a particularly mineral-rich dirt or sand on a hike, for instance, I’ll bring a jar back and mix it with acrylic or other mediums. Lately, I’ve been learning to identify and utilize wild clay within paintings. I also like to layer sheets of rock hounded mica for shimmer or ash from the fire for texture and depth.
Sustainability and resourcefulness are also a large part of my approach. I often source evergreens and pine needles as brushes for my watercolors and I use non-traditional tools like spatulas from the kitchen and cardboard for my acrylics. I thrift linen and silk to recover boards and canvases and I enjoy painting on wood and using recycled wood whenever possible for my framing.
This commitment to sustainability and resourcefulness is foundational to my artistic practice and reflects my broader approach to life. My company, A Made Home, embodies this ethos, emphasizing the use of readily available materials to create meaningful art.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I am deeply grateful for the incredible support system I have:
– My children, Gideon, Judah, and Liv, for their unwavering love and belief in me.
– Johnny, for his artistic input, frame building skills, and for pitching me for that first HGTV opportunity.
– My dear friends Ashley, Alice, and Shelton, who have always seen me as an artist and celebrated my creativity.
– My siblings, Ava, Chelsea, and Mason, for their constant encouragement and love.
– My dad, for passing down his artistic genes and a love for unconventional ideas and my mom, for always being supportive.
– Kinglea and Michael, owners of 240 Glynn Street, for giving me my first gallery wall and mural opportunity.
– Eder and Rick with Caza Homes, for providing me with wonderful opportunities to collaborate and create beautiful designs.
I wouldn’t be where I am today without the love, support, and encouragement of all these amazing people!
