Today we’d like to introduce you to Harvey (HD) Davis.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Hello. My name is HD and I’m a vocalist/music producer from Saginaw Michigan.
My mother attended Grambling State University, and HBCU,on a full ride music scholarship. She plays flute. Growing up, my mother always had really good gospel or inspirational music playing in our home while she would walk around playing her flute. I would dance and sing along. She played for our church, so at rehearsals, I got used to being around and hearing live instruments. I fell in love with it all. As I got a little older, my mother started to let me venture out a little bit, and I met a group of guys who could sing really well. We had a Boyz II Men vibe and were known locally for our dope acapella harmony. I also joined a community choir that traveled across the country performing.
The choir belonged to a friend and current major gospel producer, Aaron Lewis. Aaron’s older sisters also had a gospel group called Rizen. We alled travelled and performed together. We shared stages with the top gospel acts of that era, such as Yolanda Adams, Kim Burrell, Trinity 5:7 and the list goes on. It was a great experience and one of the only professional music outlets for a group of teenagers in my city.
As I grew older, I fell in love with Neo, soul and R&B music. My friends and I started promoting our group outside of our city. We worked with artist, such as Calvin Richardson, we were on the Apollo Show, and in Atlanta, we worked closely with A. J. Alexander, who is credited for dicovering Usher. After running into some issues with the boy band, me, and Andray Millege colaborated with our friend Jessica Reedy, to form a small group. As you may or may not know, groups are very hard to hold together in the music industry. We all ended taking seperate musical paths. Jessica is now a professional gospel artist. I moved from Michigan to Atlanta. Since I’ve been operating as a solo act, i’ve opened concerts for many of my favorite artists, such as Tank and Ginuwine, Fantasia, Jon B and a few more amazing singers. My band has performed at many of the live music hotspots here in Atlanta, such as St. James, Sweet Georgia’s Juke Joint, and many of the live outdoor music events held at the amphitheaters in many Metro Atlanta towns. Also, I currently sing for private events throught the Southeastern US with a corporate band by the name of City Heat.
When I’m not working on a live show, I am in the studio writing and creating.
I will be dropping a new song on December 1 called “Music Feels So Good”. It’s a smooth blend of Neo Sol, R&B, and jazz that simply highlights how good music makes me feel and I think my listeners can definitely relate to that feeling.
My mom planted the seed, and now I live a life surrounded by music and the beautiful experiences that come with it !!!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The obstacles/challenges that I often run into are human interactions. The music industry can be very shady. Jealousy runs rampant. A few of my close friends stop communicating with me as soon as I started to get similar recognition, or I started to be called to share some of the same stages as them. It’s also very hard to keep a loyal team together. People are always looking for the next best opportunity versus building something from scratch and watching it thrive. We all need a team, but it’s hard to find the right individuals.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
If you ask people that know me musically, you may get different answers of who they define me as.
Most people know me as a lead vocalist, and at times, I do a lot of runs and riffs that most people enjoy. Maybe a vocally, acrobatic singer? Lol
Also, in lives music settings, especially where their are singers, I’m known for organizing background vocals, and uniqe harmonies. It’s my specialty.
Some know me as more of a singer/songwriter/producer.
I get a lot of calls to come to studios and do background vocals or to cover a writer’s song. Once most people see how comfortable I am in the studio, they usually give me free range to do what I want, whether it’s my music I’m creating or someone else’s music that I’m called to work on.
What seems to impress people often is how I adapt to different genres well.
I’ve been hired to be a rapper, I’ve also been hired to sing for theatrical performances. A couple of years ago I was asked to sing, “Dear Theodosia” from the Broadway Musical “Hamilton” for a church in Decatur.
A lot of artists like to stick to a specific genre, but I like to consider myself genre-less.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I am always very nervous, especially when I have to perform.
I am even more nervous in front of small crowds. I never do well in auditions, but on stage in front of hundreds or thousands I feel completely comfortable. Backwards, right? Lol
And though most people see me at concerts, or other social events, I’d really rather stay home almost every day and night.
