Today we’d like to introduce you to Imam Ahmad Saleem.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
In my early twenties, I felt a calling to delve into the traditional sciences of Islam. This led my entire family and me to relocate to the Middle East, where I immersed myself in learning the Arabic language and mastering classical Islamic sciences. Upon my return in 2018, I gained recognition as a sought-after speaker in Toronto.
Amidst the challenges of the Covid pandemic, I transitioned to become an influential online speaker, extending my support to various centers and cultivating a robust digital presence. Through the power of the internet, I caught the attention of individuals in Georgia, and over the course of a year and a half, I negotiated the details of my move, culminating in my relocation to Georgia in March of the previous year.
Currently, I proudly serve as the resident Imam and scholar at Hamza Islamic Centre in Alpharetta, overseeing a congregation of 1500 people and 300+ families. Our diverse programs cater to individuals of all ages and backgrounds, ranging from Friday family nights, drawing 300 to 350 patrons weekly to Friday prayers attracting nearly 800 worshippers. Our Friday Family Nights have become one of the largest Halaqah; a weekly mass for Muslims; if not the largest in greater Atlanta amongst the Muslims.
In the ongoing year, we have already served over 10,000 patrons, with aspirations to reach 20,000 in 2024. At Hamza, our community thrives not only in spirituality but also in sports activities. From volleyball and cricket to basketball and badminton, we host tournaments where mosques from all over Atlanta participate, solidifying Hamza Islamic Centre as the hub that unites various Islamic perspectives under the common bond of sports, acting as the cohesive force within the community.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Navigating this path has indeed been a formidable challenge, especially considering my transition from a corporate career to the realm of social nonprofits. Understanding the landscape has proven arduous, given my background as a North American raised MAM (Muslim of American Muslim), where the predominant culture leans towards the Western. Most mosques operate within a cultural framework linked to versions of assimilation from their respective homelands.
It’s crucial to highlight that many mosques in North America may not fully represent American Muslim culture yet. This discrepancy arises because those at the helm of these mosques are often deeply influenced by their cultural roots. As the torch passes to the next generation, the impending challenge lies in seamlessly taking over from those who constructed these admirable infrastructures. While expressing gratitude to them, the focus shifts towards creating programming and environments that resonate more with the faith of Western-born Muslims.
Research indicates a notable trend of transition among this demographic, underscoring the evolving landscape as younger generations seek to shape a Muslim identity more attuned to their Western upbringing.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Presently, I serve as the Resident Imam at Hamza Islamic Center, specializing in Quranic exegesis and the study of Prophet Mohammed’s life. My notable contributions lie in the realm of teenagers and families, where I’ve spearheaded successful programs, including the widely acclaimed Friday Family Night, resonating across North America.
One achievement that fills me with pride is the establishment of a nurturing space for Muslim teenagers in Canada, aptly named Deenagers. The prospect of expanding this initiative to the United States and infusing that vibrant spirit into this new terrain excites me.
My unique strength lies in delivering lectures that captivate audiences spanning from children to the elderly. This ability has allowed me to engage diverse demographics for extended periods, sharing explanations and stories that resonate deeply. I consider this a divine gift and look forward to extending its impact into various facets of my life.
Equally gratifying is my ability to connect with individuals on a personal level, a gift I attribute to divine blessings. I am eager to further develop these interpersonal skills, contributing to the cohesion and unity of the communities I serve.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Finding joy for me lies in the moments when I have the opportunity to unravel the depths of the Holy Quran for others. Serving as a conduit for people to connect with their God is profoundly fulfilling. I express gratitude to Allah SWT for granting me the understanding of His book, guiding me through life’s challenges, and enabling me to master the language to a level where I can convey its messages in Arabic to the broader audience.
Equally rewarding is my engagement with teenagers and young individuals. This experience not only enhances my confidence but also strengthens my ability to connect. The satisfaction derived from serving them in unexpected ways is something I cherish, marking a journey beyond my initial imaginings.
