Daily Inspiration: Meet Imani P

Today we’d like to introduce you to Imani P.

Imani, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Hello, my name is Imani P from the DMV you know where I am at; you know where I be. I started music blogging back in 2016 while I was attending Howard University studying Health Science and Management. The website I was using at the time was called koolinthegang.blog. After a few failed ventures with other music podcasts, in 2020 I started my Youtube channel called “imaniversus” where I make commentary on music, culture, anime, videogames, and more. It is like an extension of my original music blog, but you can see the person behind the camera. This is where I am currently, I have quick reviews where I critique and review people’s music on my TikTok: imaniversus and on my Youtube channel: imaniversus. I review and comment on all acts, small to large, and from any genre.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road. It took a lot of courage to show myself on camera initially because I dislike people. This is why I started my website koolinthegang.blog primarily because I do not like showing my face. After gaining a little audience who requested my face to be shown; I finally did it. This is after a failed podcast venture where I was recruited to do the same thing I am doing on my Youtube channel now, but with three other men. That did not work out due to differences amongst the group members. I did gain a bit of popularity through that as well.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am most known for being a “hater” because I unbiasedly critique music. I take any favoritism out of my comment on music and I just speak about the song, the rollout, the record label, the management, and the audience reception. It was something hard to master over the years, but I learned how to do it. I receive a lot of feedback from my audience stating that I am respectful and funny about the comments I make. It is hard to dislike or refute the critiques I have. I am very proud of that skill and want more people to see it. I think that is what sets me apart from others that I can look at music objectively.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite childhood memory is drinking ginger beer with my grandmother in West Philly on a hot summery day, in her big dining room full of a bunch of just stuff, and listening to reggae or jazz or the news.
