Daily Inspiration: Meet Innate

Today we’d like to introduce you to Innate.

Hi Innate, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My music career has been very organic so far, and it has been a journey of finding my place in the giant pool of Atlanta music. I have been endlessly attending events, meeting other artists, and taking in everything the city has to offer. My music shows this influence by using many styles that I’ve been exposed to. I’ve been throwing myself into the scene for a long time now.

My first love is hip-hop, and I found a lane by using melody-focused songs on ambient beats. Melody is king, and that is the main thing I focus on when creating. I have a big vocal range and can rap melodically, so I tend to start a song and follow where it takes me. I have to have something that challenges me, and I try to keep things interesting. This next project is me having less restraints on my music, and it’s got a really big ambient sound. It’s called Blank Slate and represents starting again until you get it.

In terms of signature things about me, I like the lightning bolt as a symbol. Move fast, make an impact. If you catch me outside, I’m probably wearing a suit, graphic tee, and some wingtips. My Instagram is mostly black and white photos because I’m a big fan of the neo-noir look.

I want to make music to get lost in. I’m trying to build a world with my sound. Excited for what’s next.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not at all. I’ve had to find out everything for myself. There have been key moments that have shaped how I look at making music. I’ve learned many lessons. Music was the only thing that stayed constant. I feel like I’ve lived 4 or 5 lives in my 20’s, and that struggle has given me the perspective to make better music. I am grateful for my struggles because they gave me a story and way of looking at the world. I feel ready to push myself for more.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My name is Innate, and it’s the idea that things come naturally to anyone with the courage to pursue their passions. I am a singer, rapper, mix engineer, and creative. I specialize in a melodic, ambient sound that has creative mixing and tones to it.

I am a storyteller at heart. My first album (THE MAN I SEE) is a concept album revolving around my journey with personal struggles and getting sober (I have over 3 years as of today). It is raw, real, and meant to make you feel what that phase of my life was like. I am so proud that I was able to make that and make my story heard.

As far as my sound, I love heavy-reverb vocals and tight writing. My voice has gotten comparisons to Post Malone, and I think that’s a great compliment. I don’t see genres; I see ideas and melodies. I want to make the best song, and I hate boxes to fit in. Be yourself and make cool things. That’s it.

What matters most to you? Why?
Being real. It’s rare and hard-to-find nowadays. The real win in the end.
