Daily Inspiration: Meet Janelle King

Today we’d like to introduce you to Janelle King.

Hi Janelle, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I am a Registered Nurse with a Master of Public Health. I began my career in Public Health, where I educated clients about chronic diseases, HIV, and maternal and child health. Then, I transitioned into nursing, working for one of the country’s best children’s hospitals. I counseled girls and young women about birth control options, led discussions about sex and safer sex practices, and provided counseling and treatment for sexually transmitted infections.

I found in my work that there is a lot of misinformation about sexual and reproductive health, so I started my blog and social media platforms to educate women about their bodies!

I figured why not talk about these subjects on public platforms? People need access to accurate content presented in a relatable manner to dispel myths and correct inaccuracies.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road hasn’t been smooth. I think one of my biggest challenges was really self-imposed. I had to put myself out there to talk about topics that are usually not talked about in public. There was fear about how I would be perceived and how others would react to my content. I’m fortunate to have cultivated relationships with individuals who have offered support and insight and have shared my content with their respective audiences.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Simply put, I help simplify information about vaginas, periods, and sex. I use my clinical background to create engaging articles and content related to vaginal health, sex, and sexuality.

I’m grateful that I’ve had the opportunity to collaborate and work with other like-minded individuals and brands. I was recently nominated for Journey Awards- an award that honors selfless visionaries who inspire others through their incredible Journey.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
There is always a risk when you are putting yourself out there on public platforms. There is a risk of backlash, ridicule, judgment, etc. But I genuinely believe that “the greater the risk, the greater the reward.” I’ve taken risks with my career (nursing is my second career), my clinical positions, starting a platform dedicated to sexual health. So yeah, I believe in taking risks. I think it stretches you personally (and professionally) even if things don’t work out exactly as planned.
