Today we’d like to introduce you to Jaquan Nelson.
Hi Jaquan, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Born and raised in Cincinnati, OH. Long story short, I would say it all started when I heard Akon’s “Locked Up.” I would really get into it whenever it came on the radio. That’s when I realized I had a decent singing voice. From there my parents bought me a stereo system for Christmas. I remember playing songs on repeat, writing each line out so that I could learn the lyrics. I started with Mario’s “Let me Love You,” which introduced me to songwriters such as Ne-Yo and The Dream.
From that point on I really can’t remember a day where I wasn’t singing or humming. In high school, I was in Senior Choir and did the talent show once, but I never really stepped out of my comfort zone to take music seriously. I was shy growing up so it made that extremely challenging. It wasn’t until I graduated from college and working full time that I realized it’s always been music. Coming to that realization, I put together a one year plan to grow as a musician and move to Atlanta. I officially moved here at the beginning of October 2020. Since then, I’ve been consistently seeking ways to grow as a singer/songwriter.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Not at all. I’m constantly dealing with obstacles. I guess that’s how you know if you’re really passionate about something. No matter what’s in your path, you’re going to find a way to continue moving forward. For example, I’ve always struggled with confidence. In a weird way, I think I’m so passionate about music because it forces me to grow. If I want to become a great musician, I have to heal and grow as a person. There’s no way around it. It’s a constant battle.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a Singer/Songwriter who apparently is known for making sad songs about women I’ve fallen in love with, at least that’s what I’ve been told. Songwriting wise I’m pretty open regarding genres but I mostly write R&B songs.
I’m most proud of my courage. I wouldn’t be here without it. It can be intimidating putting emotions out there for everyone one to see but I think that’s why people enjoy the songs I’ve written so far. A lot of people, including myself, suppress their emotions so it can be comforting when they know someone has had similar experiences.
I think my ability to empathize and listen sets me apart from other songwriters. When I’m writing a song for someone it’s almost like I become them during the writing process.
