Today we’d like to introduce you to Jared Yamamoto.
Jared, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Some of my first memories as a kid involve the radio. I remember long road trips with my dad and even longer trips to the mall with my mom. No matter the length of the ride, the radio was always there. There was that little voice in my head saying, “man, now that’s a job that sounds fun… you just talk for a living. What an easy job!”
Fast-forward to college, when I mistakenly walked into the first broadcast of the relaunch of The University of West Georgia’s college radio station, The WOLF Radio. I was so embarrassed, but I played it off well and ended up working for the college station until I graduated.
Jumping into professional radio, I was hired for my first part-time radio job before I graduated from the University of West Georgia. I worked as an associate producer for a struggling station. After six months I graduated, but the station changed formats and fired their entire staff, including me. I was devastated. I was fresh out of college without a job in my field. I applied to over 50 radio stations when finally a few months later I was offered an opportunity to run the control board overnights for WSB Radio. I knew this was my shot. I wanted to be great! For 2 years I worked multiple jobs while trying to land a full-time position at WSB Radio and then I finally got my opportunity to be a full-time producer. Today, I co-host and produce the Von Haessler Doctrine weekdays from 9-Noon on 95.5 WSB in Atlanta. The Doctrine’s success has allowed me the opportunity to host The Power Pod from 10-Noon on Sundays in Athens, Georgia on WGAU Radio.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Just like any career, nothing is given to you and nothing is easy. I do not work a typical 9-5 shift and some days are much longer than others. As a public figure, you have to make sacrifices to hit your goals. I’ve worked many holidays, but hard work pays off. Trust me.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am the Producer/Co-Host of The Von Haessler Doctrine radio show on 95.5 WSB in Atlanta, Georgia. I also host my own show, The Power Pod on 98.7Fm and AM1340WGAU in Athens, Georgia.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
Media is constantly changing and as a radio professional I’ve had to adjust my technique several times in the last 10 years. I think the most important aspect of any media job is to deliver for your audience. I have the unique advantage of being born and raised in Atlanta unlike my competition. The world is always changing and you have to change with it without sacrificing who you are as a person.
