Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica James.
Hi Jessica, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Well, I do still work a 8 hour job but I also work on my craft daily! I’ve started creating more content for myself! I’ve started creating music and even writing short series. I’ve done a lot of Background work! I have some featured roles! Some short films as well and one commercial! I started as a child with being involved and watching musicals and plays! My dad loves music! But My mom loves musicals and plays! She’s the one who introduced me to theatre arts! Film and entertainment just falls within! I think I did my first play in church as a child! I’m currently just trying to find the best way to bring my visions to life and find the right people to help me in the areas. I’m in need of a agent and manager!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s not smooth and definitely can be rough but totally worth it because they are my goals and dreams! Certain struggles are people aren’t reliable when they are supposed to be. I don’t wait on anyone to do anything for me! Well, maybe my parents lol but that’s it! However certain things like recording my music or films I’m not sure how to do so it’s just hard to bring my vision to life when people schedule conflict! Another huge issue is money! Trying to make music and films can be very very expensive!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am an actress. In the past few years I’ve been making music but nothing is released just yet! Coming soon. I’d say I’m known for being funny but also as an actress. I’m most proud of me not giving up. I’m in a Tyler Perry film called “Fall From Grace”. I don’t have any lines but I get my own screen time. I’m in another film that just came out on BET plus (Big 50) I’m seen quickly! But my name is in credits. I’m very excited about that! I’d say what sets me apart is I’m totally in it for the fun. A lot of people want to do it just because it’s a cool thing and it’s a quick way to make good money. For me it’s fun. I could be on set for 12 hours and still not be ready to go home. Where I could go to me clerical job and I’m ready to go in 2 mins! Lol.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Networking is just about meeting the right people! That doesn’t mean they have to be known it’s all about great advice & connections. A mentor in this field would be lovely. Haven’t found one yet. I know It’s coming soon. What’s worked well for me is keeping my eyes open and going to all types of sets. Just because it’s non-paid doesn’t mean it won’t be great connections and doors that can open for you!
