Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Terry
Jessica, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I don’t even remember how old I was when I started writing; I just know the love for it started early. I loved being creative and also was heavy into drawing, crafts, and sewing (I wasn’t very good at that one, I admit), but writing is the only thing that has stuck all these years.
As much as I wanted to be a bestselling author (as I used to tell myself I’d be), I wasn’t sure how to go about it. I wrote my first serious novel (aka the first one I wrote with the intent to publish) in college and submitted it to a publisher, and they offered me a contract, but the terms were awful and a family friend who was an attorney advised me to pass.
Fast forward a few years to 2008. That same family friend introduced me to self-publishing, and walked me through the process. That kicked it off for me and I’ve been releasing books ever since.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The writing itself has been great; it’s all the other things like promotion, growing readership, and getting reviews. That’s absolutely been the biggest struggle for me.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I write contemporary Black fiction, mostly in the women’s fiction and romance genres. My tagline is ‘Make it funny, make it messy, make it hot’… that encompasses what I like to include in all my books; humor, messiness/drama, and some heat, though the ratios may vary by the story.
I love creating characters that are relatable, that make you feel something, even if it’s anger. If you’re feeling something, then I succeeded. I just want to entertain and provide an escape.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
I grew up in Douglasville and I like that it’s (relatively) quiet and has space yet is still close enough to the city so I can go when I need to without issue.
What I don’t like… that so many people are moving there. LOL And I wish there was more variety in our restaurants and entertainment choices.
