Daily Inspiration: Meet Jhalin Knowles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jhalin Knowles.

Hi Jhalin, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I grew up in Cleveland Ohio and moved to Georgia in 2014, which was my junior year of high school. During my junior year I entered a photography class where I learned the basics of photography. I randomly fell in love and never stopped. I started posting some of my work through the app VSCO and noticed the likes I started to receive. One day VSCO emailed me saying they wanted me to be a part of a campaign they were doing to inspire others to create. This opportunity was huge to me and definitely made me believe that I could actually turn this hobby into a full career. While shooting I realized how much I loved taking portraits. Capturing my younger siblings’ smiles and different emotions really stuck out to me. I think it’s amazing how pictures can tell a full story or allow you to feel so many emotions from one look. I feel that it’s my responsibility as a creative to show my people in a positive light. I love seeing black people front and center shining, smiling and thriving. I think we are so beautiful, complex and strong and I hope my work can show that.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I think for the most part my journey has been pretty smooth. The most difficult part if any is believing in myself. It’s so easy to compare yourself to other artists in the industry who are making it. As artists, we are our own worst critics and never fully feeling like you are enough or trusting your vision can suck honestly. Surrounding myself with positive people like family and friends definitely helps me get over that feeling.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m Jhalin Knowles, an Atlanta, Georgia based freelance photographer. Through my work, I try to put a spotlight on the beauty of black people. Telling our stories and making sure we are seen. I feel kind of weird saying this is what sets me apart from others because I think we’re all working towards the same thing. I’d say I want to make sure we stay in the spotlight and are given the same opportunities as everyone else. Through my work, I think I can accomplish that.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
To be honest, I struggle with networking sometimes. I can be very introverted and shy so my advice would be don’t be like me. I’ve made an effort to grow stronger in my networking skills. If you want to make it in life, especially as a creative, your networking skills have to be amazing. So many opportunities can come from just one conversation.
