Today we’d like to introduce you to Jinah Huh.
Hi Jinah, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Since I was a kid, I loved art and music. My first dream was to become an artist and sell my drawings as a living. I did outgrow that dream after a couple of years and wanted to become a singer. I always loved to sing, and growing up, I would listen to music with my dad and hear him sing and play guitar. He had taught me how to play guitar when I was young, and I was put in piano lessons as well. I have so many fun memories of singing with my cousin after piano lessons at my Aunt’s house and writing songs in my room on an old iMac. In high school, I played the keyboard for my church band and continued to play on my own time during my early years of college. After a few years, I transferred to the Atlanta Institute of Music and Media to study music and keyboard performance. Attending this school was a big turning point for me as I was able to meet people who had similar goals and aspirations as me for the first time. I was able to meet so many wonderful people, some of whom have become very close friends of mine, and I started to pursue music more seriously. Since graduating in December 2020, I have been teaching piano and playing keyboard in a corporate band, as well as continuing to write my own music.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has definitely not been the smoothest. Growing up, one of my biggest dreams was to become a singer and it wasn’t something my parents were thrilled about. I wasn’t able to find support in musical endeavors from my family and felt rarely understood by friends when I was younger. I was also already a very shy kid, so facing discouragement on top of that made it extremely hard for me to express my passion for music or participate in it aside from playing instruments as extracurriculars. In college, I was pursuing a degree in Industrial Design before I transferred to music school, and I struggled with not being able to express the creative/emotional side of myself. I felt very mentally stuck for a couple of years trying to figure out what I was meant to do. I just knew that I wanted to have music in my life and be around it. After a significant event in my life that resulted in me dropping out of the school I was attending at the time, I felt that it was the right time to finally pursue my passion. So, I started school at the Atlanta Institute of Music and Media, where I was able to work on something I really loved and gain support from my family and friends, who I am very grateful for.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I would say that I am most known for teaching piano and writing. I enjoy teaching very much and would like to teach as much as I can. I teach private lessons as well as a few keyboard classes at the Atlanta Institute of Music and Media. I am, however, the most passionate about writing and would like to write songs for artists in the future. I am proud of how much I have been able to open up and share my work with others and get out of my comfort zone. I think what sets me apart is my style of writing. It is definitely influenced by the different types and cultures of music that I grew up listening to. I lean on the expression of emotion through lyrics and delivering the message through delicate melodies.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
I define success as being confident in what you do and having it be an enrichment in your life. This doesn’t have to be referring to a career but to any personal endeavor.
