Daily Inspiration: Meet Jordan Martin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordan Martin.

Hi Jordan, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
After living in Atlanta for seven years, I relocated back to my hometown of Chicago during the pandemic. During that time, I lost my Dad and almost my Mom. One day as I was driving around Chicago and working for DoorDash, I heard a commercial for the Illinois Media School. I contacted them and began taking courses in October 2020. I graduated from their Radio and Television Program in May 2021. I then enrolled in their virtual Digital Marketing Course and completed that in October 2021. During this time, I relocated back to Atlanta in August 2021.

Once I returned, I began working for N’Style Atlanta as a Media Correspondent. When I first began, I started conducting interviews with celebrities, hosting my own “Hot Topics” segments, and attending exclusive events in Atlanta. We have also expanded the brand to a reality show, “N’Style Atlanta: Uncut” on Fox Soul.

Shortly after starting with N’Style Atlanta, I began working for Cox Media Group’s Promotions Team. In February 2022, I received a promotion and began working as a Digital Producer for 95.5 WSB. In August, I received another promotion and began working for KISS and the newly syndicated Frank Ski Show with Nina Brown. I was initially hired as the Phone Screener for the show and have since become the Associate Producer for the show.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Some of the struggles that I have faced have been personal. When I first moved back to Atlanta, the city was still feeling the effects of the pandemic – rent was HIGH, very little vacancies for apartments and not to mention I still had to parent my 15-year-old son. After living with friends and in hotels for eight months, I finally found an apartment for myself and my son.

Professionally, I struggle with my work/life balance. When I first started working in media, I would overwork myself and say yes to EVERYTHING! I easily burnt myself out and now I have learned how to say no and to be aware of my limits. I now try to plan my week in advance – if possible and limit myself to 3 events a week. I also make it my business to spend more time with my son. Every weekend, we have some sort of Mommy/Son date.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I work for the nationally syndicated Frank Ski Show with Nina Brown. As the Phone Screener/Associate Producer, I typically wake up around 3 am, check to see if any news or entertainment has broken since I looked the night before and add it to our prep documents. I typically spend about 30 minutes doing this, then I begin to prepare for my day. I usually arrive to work around 5 am and begin preparing the studio for Frank and Nina’s arrival and show.

This includes printing out any documents that they need including show clock, liners, guests, editing and uploading audio, headphones for hosts and guests, and updating our dry-erase boards with pertinent information for the day. Once the show starts, I am responsible for answering the phones and producing the best calls to tie into the topics being discussed on air.

I also assist with directing the room in-between breaks. This includes informing Frank and Nina what’s coming up in the next break, how many callers we have on hold, preparing them for any interviews, breaking news and anything else that may be needed.

Once the show wraps, we have a daily meeting to discuss the show and what’s to come for the following day. Every evening we have a planning meeting to discuss the show for the following day, including content. Throughout the night, I am keeping a close eye on any news and entertainment stories that we can potentially use. My days usually end around 10:30/11 PM.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Being a mom and spending time with my family. When I became a mother at the age of 17, I wasn’t sure what this journey had in store for me, but it is my greatest honor in life! My son Jaiden reminds me daily what my purpose is. I honestly believe he saved my life. I wasn’t sure what my next plans were in life, but when he born, it allowed me to focus and take life seriously.

My parents raised my siblings and I to love, appreciate and protect each other because family is all that you have, My siblings and I are very close and even though we don’t see each other daily, we’re always in constant communication with each other. We have even raised our children to be close like siblings as opposed to cousins. When we lost my Dad in August 2020, I believe that brought us closer. Tragedy almost struck our family twice in one month. Two Days after my Father’s funeral, my Mother passed out at home and was rushed to the emergency room. The bottom chamber of her heart stopped working and she had to a pacemaker put in, again, we were brought closer as we couldn’t lose our rock.

In addition to my immediate family, I have a host of cousins, aunts and uncles who believe in traditions. Every year for Thanksgiving and Christmas, we gather together. We also host family reunions throughout the country every other year and come together for graduations, weddings, birthdays and any other major celebrations.
