Daily Inspiration: Meet Joshua Moran

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joshua Moran.

Hi Joshua, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been around camera’s most of my life, but my interest really peaked when I was a teenager. I grew up watching Youtube and fell in love with the vlogging genre- the idea of capturing a day-to-day snippet of your life was very interesting to me. This was a little time capsule of your life at one point, something I could look back on whenever I wanted to. I could see growth or lack thereof. All of the little details that would typically be lost in translation was there for me, or anyone, to see and experience firsthand.

I took this mentality and applied it to a passion project- my brother was a high school theater kid a few years ago, and they were producing a stage show for “The Addams Family”. Looking back on how fun and important documenting my life was, I offered to create a ‘behind the scenes’ documentary of making a high school musical. It was a lot of (free) work, but I knew how special this would be for the kids later on in life. Thankfully, the students and their parents loved the finished product and it’s an experience I’ll never forget.

That project lead me to the question, “How can I take this and give it to others?” Weddings were the obvious answer. A wedding is one of the most important days of someone’s life, and for most people, that day goes by in a second. That’s where we come in! Being able to provide a new family with a time capsule of that incredible day is an honor. I am just a small part of a new forever, and it’s a special feeling to have. I’ve gotten to work with the most incredible and interesting people, some of who I consider to be friends. It’s not easy work, but I wouldn’t trade it for the world.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
For the first year of my career, I had to balance a full-time job in addition to shooting weddings every weekend. Running a business while working for someone else is a slippery slope. Things really picked up during the summer of that year- I had a wedding every weekend for a couple of months. It amounted to about 70 hour weeks a lot of the times. Being creative on the shoot or in the edit was difficult when my mental tank was drained. I knew I couldn’t sustain this long term and that a change had to be made. The following year, I decided to take a leap of faith and leave my full-time job to pursue weddings full time. I’ve made rent every month since then, so I guess things are working out! It’s the best decision I could’ve made, and I’m grateful for the life I live everyday.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m an Alpharetta-based Wedding Videographer. I’ve been able to do this for a few years now, but we’re still growing. I’ve been fortunate enough to work with some incredible clients and meeting fantastic people. I’m proud of who I am as person and personally think I’m great to work with! At the end of it all, I really just care about people, and providing the best service to them is my main priority. This mindset has allowed me to find the people I really want to work with and not just book someone because the “price is right”.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
Much like weddings, not everything goes according to plan. Being adaptable is your biggest asset in this industry, and quick decision-making can make or break a shot or even a day. I was fortunate enough to not have too many rescheduling conflicts due to Covid, but it taught me that business can be fickle. You get used to this routine of booking dates or making (x) amount per month, but that is never promised. Be smart with your money and business, and prepare for those “rainy days”.
