Today we’d like to introduce you to Jude Kamal.
Hi Jude, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’m an interior designer and a lover for all things design. I love creating and exploring new design concepts. Ever since I was a kid, I wanted to be an artist and then I somehow stumbled across being a designer.
My company, Sansa Interiors Inc., revolves around creating full-blown interior design services mainly serving Toronto and the GTA. We focus on functionality of spaces and bringing a tailored and holistic approach to our clients. Our designs are wild and bold, infused with a balance of colour, volumes and layering through texture. We do both high-end custom residential and commercial design, so each project is different and unique.
I started this business 1 week before covid-19, and by the time we registered and launched the business, it was April of 2020 so at the rise of the pandemic. It was craziest roller coaster ride ever and a huge challenge to take on.
Being an entrepreneur had its own set of challenges, from hiring a team to getting sales, learning to put off fires, to making sure projects are on track… PLUS doing the actual design work! I spent a week scribbling a quick goals and objectives plan, as well as a sketch of how I see this operating. My goal is to continue to bootstrap the company instead of seeking funding.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road is never smooth, it is full of bumps, turns, red lights and sometimes some flat tires.
The biggest struggle when you start a company is to get people to believe in you. I had to get out of my comfort zone, to talk to people, to sell our services and ensure we secure some deals.
Once we got one project, the work started to flow, then it became scary to have to have to hire a team. When I started hiring, I had no idea what I was doing, all I knew was that I needed help.
We are now an all-women diverse team. This team is my rock, and I am so fortunate to have them.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I grew up in Jordan, surrounded by artists, creators and lots of beautiful architecture. So the vision for the design aesthetic and mission for Sansa Interiors came naturally to me; a design that strikes a fine balance between bold and vibrant elements and upscale elegance. We focus on the holistic side of a space, the flow, the draw of inspiration from nature.
What makes us different aside from the design approach is that we are young, active and so passionate about our work. Our Sansa Interiors design team is formed of diverse backgrounds allowing us to curate different projects and understand different cultures better.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
To stop and breathe.
