Daily Inspiration: Meet Julia Thorne

Today we’d like to introduce you to Julia Thorne.

Hi Julia, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I began my journey in nursing in 2004 at Florida Hospital East Orlando, where I was a Medical/Surgical/Telemetry RN for six years while completing my Nursing Education Masters and my NP education at the University of Central Florida. My husband and two children relocated to Georgia in 2010, where I worked as a Family NP for two years before discovering Integrated Healthcare. I worked in an office that offered integrated services, including physical therapy, chiropractic, and regenerative therapies for six years.

During this time, I not only became a national trainer for regenerative injection therapy but also attained my Legal Nurse Consulting certificate from the University of Georgia and started my very own compliance consulting company. My goal was to fully educate healthcare providers on how to maximize safety and compliance in the workplace while delivering exceptional patient results. All of these paths eventually led me to the wonderful world of aesthetic medicine, where regenerative therapies and amazing patient results come together in a harmonious symphony.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There are definitely speed bumps that have occurred along the way but had I sped along with no speed bumps, I probably wouldn’t be where I am today. One of the greatest struggles I feel that I have encountered is working for a company that put profit over patients. It was a daily battle to protect my patient’s best interests and it really did teach me how to advocate for my patients. Another struggle was really finding where my passion and my niche was in a profession that had so many opportunities. I am so glad that my journey has led me to aesthetic medicine, it is where I truly feel I belong. Aesthetics allow me to truly communicate and take my time with each patient and develop an understanding of what they want to achieve, and interestingly enough, most of the time it has more to do with perfecting inner confidence and less to do with a superficial correction. I aim to deliver an overall outcome vs just a result.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
So a lot of people kind of know what a Nurse Practitioner is and what they can do, but it is really important to me to educate people I encounter on what my profession is and just how absolutely amazing it is! So first, a bit about the education it took to achieve my Nurse Practitioner degree. I spent four years doing my undergraduate degree in nursing, followed by six years of direct patient care in a hospital while I was completing my Master’s Degree. I am currently enrolled in a relatively new degree program- a Doctorate in Nursing Practice, or DNP. This doctorate degree focuses on the application of current research into nursing practice. It will also allow me the ability to teach both NP’s and DNPs in the future.

Nurse practitioners are a vital part of the health care system and are able to independently diagnose and treat a myriad of conditions. You will find NP’s in primary care and specialty roles and will find that we offer a breadth of experience and knowledge, surpassed only by the stellar patient care we provide to each and every patient. Additionally, I have expanded my non-patient care repertoire of services to include legal nurse consulting and compliance consulting. The opportunities that are available in nursing are abundant and I encourage anyone considering the profession to go for it. It is a career that abounds with rewarding experiences and opportunities.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
My biggest cheerleader has been my husband of 17 years. Every step of the way, he has pushed me to do more, to be my very best self. Every endeavor I have ventured into, especially those out of my comfort zone, has been due to his gentle push and confidence in my abilities. My two children, who are now teenagers, also are very encouraging and setting a good example of exceptional work ethic has been really important to me. Furthermore, I have worked with some fabulous MDs that have truly believed in and utilized my skills and knowledge as a Nurse Practitioner to the fullest extent. Working alongside physicians that treat you as their equal and respect you is something I hope every Nurse Practitioner attains during their career.
