Today we’d like to introduce you to Kamar Doe Wiz Lewis.
Hi Kamar Doe Wiz, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started my clothing line when it was discovered after I made a sweatshirt to wear for my performance at an event that were scouting new talent, Initially I wanted to be a rap artist so I came up with my stage name DOE WIZ and decided to create a character that signifies the meaning of my name. Once I created the character, I designed a sweatshirt and wore it for my performance. After my performance, people in the crowd started asking about my sweatshirt and how can they get one and then I met the chief editor for floss magazine and he said I should make my design into a clothing line so I followed his advise and he was right. I started making t-shirts and hoodies and people were buying my merchandise, later I did my first fashion show for a foster care charity event in Downtown Brooklyn New York to help inspire and motivate youths that were raised in the foster care environment. Following the my fist show, I was able to do more fashion shows at colleges like Brooklyn Tech, and Columbia University, and later New York Fashion week to now my items are being sold in Manhattan at a store called AVANT GARDE Fusion located at 167 Mott Street.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road was’nt smooth at first, my challenges were dealing with my new found talent as a fashion designer, fear and self doubt and having to learn about fabrics, color pallets, sizing charts, price points, learning not to over promise and under deliver, dealing with customers, brand ambassadors, manufacturing companies, models, photographers, but one of my biggest challenge was surviving COVID 19 2020, after creating all this momentum to now trying to pick up the pieces, a lot of businesses that I was associated with were gone or relocated, but with resilience and will power my brand was able to survive and our customers continued supporting, events were back again, venues opened again for shows and pop up shops and everything got placed back into perspective. However, there were moments where I remembered doors that were open and doors closed due to the pandemic, missed opportunities came but it never stopped my DOEWIZAPPAREL brand from rising and still climbing meeting all expectations and defying the odds.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I currently work as a med and treatment nurse and my specialty is to improve the quality of life for my patients. Im known for my leadership, my abilities to guide others, I strive to strengthening the team by instilling core values to make our work flow better. Im proud that Im not a quiter, Im proud to say that I stick to the plan until every detail of that plan is reviewed, followed, and accomplished. What set me apart from others is the ability to see good in all people and I tend to bring the good out of people with positive encouragement and guidance.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
The role of luck I tend to flip it and say blessings. I have a mentality of anything I put my mind to I can do it, and the universe tends to align me with the right connections to achieve my goals. I focus on doing the leg work and some how an opportunity will come my way and then Im either doing a show, a customer is purchasing an item, a film director calls me and need an item for product placement, an artist is doing a video and need an urban designer to supply garments for the shoot, or a cool magazine spread which is awesome. The role of luck is cool to say but I believe in purpose aligning with opportunities is the core engine behind the success of DOEWIZAPPAREL.
