Today we’d like to introduce you to Kendall Tyler
Kendall, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I always like to say American-born, Caribbean-raised when someone asked me where I am from. On paper I was born and raised in Queens, New York. However, my entire family was born and raised in Trinidad n Tobago, and they brought their entire culture with them, which I am eternally grateful for. But, it create a sort of cognitive dissonance to be apart of the first American born generation in the family. Being raised one way, but your reality is presented differently as soon as you leave your front doorstep. I dance, model, and write. I’ve started them all at various points in the past, but dance was my first creative medium. I remember it feeling good to not have to speak to express, and not have to listen or read what someone said to understand. Writing and modeling came along later showing me that following and focusing on path alone would never work for me. I write a blog called “You Are Entirely Up to You”, and it is the embodiment of how I view life and all it’s inconveniences. The blog elaborates more on women’s self-care, lifestyle, relationships, advice etc.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think my main 3 main struggles are currency, time, and imposter syndrome. Which may be the problem trifecta for most upcoming creatives. Not always being a position or not being able to identify when we are in a position to invest in yourself/business can truly hinder the process and has hindered mine. With the economy where it is, it’s difficult to know if we can lend ourselves the luxury of pursuing a career we’re actually interested in. Additionally, I have a Bachelors of Arts degree in dance and psychology. Having this education while helpful doesn’t prepare me for all my creative endeavors. While the interest of writing didn’t come until my senior year of college it would have been nice to have taken a class to give me some confidence in my writing. Imposter syndrome melts away the more I pursue my career despite my fear.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a multifaceted creative whose concentrations are dance, modeling, and writing.
Dance: I perform and choreograph contemporary modern movement around Atlanta. Additionally, I co-teach an adult intermediate/advanced contemporary dance class at Divine Dance Studio. Lately, I’ve been interested in bring contemporary movement to a more commercial scene
Modeling: I started modeling about 2 years ago and I specialize in commercial, print, and editorial modeling
Writing: I am an online content writer. I write lifestyle, self-care, and motivational content for woman mostly. My blog is called You Are Entirely Up To You https://kendallwendall98.wixsite.com/mysite
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lesson I’ve learned thus far is to keep going, because when you do nothing, then nothing changes. I believe we are all working towards some sort of purpose but we can’t work towards anything if we stay stagnant. I have taken plenty of breaks that have sometimes lasted years. I never want to say later in life that I wish I would’ve done something that I very well could’ve tried if I would’ve just kept going.
