Today we’d like to introduce you to Kennya Davis.
Hi Kennya, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My name is Kennya Davis, and I’m a licensed nail technician based in Atlanta, GA. When I reflect on my journey, it’s hard to believe how much has changed in just a few years. It all started in 2021, right after the world shifted with the onset of Covid-19. Like so many others, I found myself grappling with uncertainty. My 9-to-5 job had started cutting hours, and bills were still stacking up. I needed to find something—anything—that could help me stay afloat financially. Little did I know, this challenging time would lead me to my true passion.
It was in the midst of this struggle that I discovered my love for nails. It’s funny, because I never thought of doing nails before—never imagined it would be something I would enjoy. But, as life often does, it presented me with a new path. God works in mysterious ways, and this unexpected turn led me to a journey I never could have predicted.
In 2022, I made the decision to move to Atlanta, seeking new opportunities. I worked at a front desk while attending nail school, eager to learn and expand my skills. Even before I finished my formal training, I was lucky enough to begin working in a nail salon. It was there that my real education began. I got to put my growing knowledge into practice and continued to refine my craft while building my portfolio. Every client, every interaction, and every new technique taught me something valuable.
Today, I can honestly say that I love what I do. Nail artistry is more than just a job to me—it’s a way to connect with people, boost their confidence, and help them feel beautiful. There’s something truly special about seeing someone walk out of the salon with a smile on their face, knowing that I had a part in making their day brighter. In a world where things can often feel heavy, putting a smile on someone’s face means everything to me.
One of the greatest joys of my journey has been the opportunity to teach others who share the same passion. Helping them grow and learn is incredibly fulfilling, and I’m excited to continue growing not only as a technician but as an instructor as well.
This is just the beginning of my nail journey, and while the road ahead is still unfolding, I’m grateful for every step that has brought me here. Who knows where it will take me next? But one thing’s for sure—I’m ready to see how far I can go.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Being a nail technician can be a rewarding career, but it’s not always a smooth road. There are several obstacles and challenges along the way. Some of the struggles include:
1. Physical Strain: Constantly standing, bending over, and using your hands for long hours can cause physical strain on your body. This can lead to issues like back pain, wrist pain, or repetitive stress injuries.
2. Client Expectations and Satisfaction: Meeting clients’ expectations can be challenging, as everyone has different preferences, and some may be harder to please than others. It’s also tough when clients aren’t satisfied with the results, which could affect your reputation and business.
3. Dealing with Difficult Clients: Not all clients are easy to work with. Some may be demanding, late for appointments, or have unrealistic expectations. Handling these situations diplomatically can be tricky.
4. Chemical Exposure: Nail technicians are exposed to various chemicals, such as acrylics, gels, and polishes. Prolonged exposure to these substances can be harmful, so it’s important to use proper ventilation and protective equipment.
5. Inconsistent Income: Especially if you’re self-employed or working on a commission-based system, income can be unpredictable. Business can be slow during certain seasons, and it’s a constant hustle to maintain a steady stream of clients.
6. Building a Clientele: When starting out, it can be tough to build a loyal client base. It takes time, marketing, and word-of-mouth to establish a steady flow of clients.
7. Regulations and Licensing: Depending on the area you work in, you might have to navigate a range of regulations, licensing requirements, and ongoing education. Staying up-to-date with these can be a challenge.
Despite these struggles, I find the work rewarding due to the creativity, personal connections with clients, and the satisfaction of helping others feel confident.
