Today we’d like to introduce you to Kenzi Taylor, LPMT, MT-BC, NMT-F
Hi Kenzi, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Perfect Harmony Health once began as The George Center Foundation, which hosted many programs and music therapy services in Roswell, GA. In 2020, our story changed to focus on nonprofit and community, opening as Perfect Harmony Health.
The name itself is a nod to our roots back in 2010: Music. Healthcare. Perfect Harmony. and helps build our future in providing life changing and innovative services. As we’ve continued to grow, we have made big dreams happen in our community, which include many new programs, like Roswell Players: an adaptive theatre program, that is unlike any other program in the county!
Our focus is to change lives across the country and even the world using the healing power of music.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
With all small businesses comes bumps in the road. Music therapy is a small profession, and a therapy that isn’t covered by insurance and paid primarily out of pocket, opens doors for more difficulties. Back in 2020, when Perfect Harmony Health transitioned to a nonprofit, many changes were made. It was a learning curve! The practice focused on still serving our clients via telehealth through a pandemic, while also trying to reach our community in ways that were safe and effective. Now, 5 years later, our reach has grown larger than when we started, we’ve been able to financially support families with scholarships to receive services, we have increased our community programming through grant funding, and so much more, and it was all because of the support we received while adapting to these changes.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Perfect Harmony Health is a nonprofit music therapy practice in Roswell, GA. We specialize in using the healing power of music to change lives. We offer Neurologic Music Therapy individual sessions for people with disabilities, adapted lessons for aspiring musicians, and a variety of programs to provide inclusive opportunities into the community.
One of our programs, Roswell Players, is an adaptive theatre program that offers the chance for actors of all abilities to shine! The Roswell Players performing arts group creates community and facilitates individual growth by learning about music, movement, and acting through social games and interactions, improvisation, and the expressive arts. Each year culminates in a staged performance showcasing each and every participant! The class is taught by licensed and board-certified music therapists with training in musical theatre performance. Our therapists work to achieve a multitude of objectives for teens and young adults with disabilities such as: gross motor skills and planning through dance and movement, speech and language through vocal training speech and diction, memory through patterns, singing, and acting, social skills through collaboration, scene work, and group exercises, mental agility through imagination, focus, and concentration skills, and many more skills!
Last year, the players performed a sold out show of Schoolhouse Rock Live! Jr. They taught the audience concepts like multiplication, the planets, nouns, and more! Because of our community, this program raised over $3k for this year’s show, allowing better quality costuming and recording software.
Soon, the Roswell Players will showcase their hard work in a multimedia performance of Willy Wonka Jr.! Come with us and you’ll be in a world of ‘pure imagination’ on Friday, April 25th, at Blessed Trinity High School in Roswell, GA. Tickets are on sale now and all proceeds benefit future Roswell Players shows.
Can’t make it to the show? Become a ‘Roswell Player’ by making a donation or purchasing merchandise!
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
One of the biggest characteristics of being a music therapist is how you adapt to situations in sessions. Sessions do not always go as planned, and we must quickly change our course of action to best support our clients’ needs. This is what we work with daily. When something needs changing, we come together with our community to refocus our impact. As the pandemic caused a lot of change in the world, it did so within the music therapy career as well. It changed the way services were provided but also how we could impact the community. We were limited in our outreach, but did not let that get in the way of our values. Instead, we adapted our programs and services to accommodate our clients! For instance, our theatre program, Roswell Players, did not perform in a theatre, instead they created a cabaret performance that was shown as a movie in an open-air theatre! This allowed for actors to still shine and participate while being safe.
Now, that program has grown even more and creates a yearly multimedia performance using both screenplay and on-stage acting. Because of this adaptation during tough times, it has blossomed into a program that truly allows each actor’s abilities shine in all forms during the performance. We use the screenplay to support the actors during lines or songs that may be more difficult in a live setting (that includes nerves, extra sensory overload, etc.). Using both screenplay and live performances gives actors the chance to express themselves to the best of their abilities.
In all of our programming, we KNOW one thing: Our story truly begins and ends with the individuals and families we serve. Our story is ever-changing, focused on the future, and treating the WHOLE person IN HARMONY, no matter the circumstance.
