Today we’d like to introduce you to Kierra Wilson.
Hi Kierra, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Growing up I always knew I wanted a career where I could be creative, but I had no idea I was going to be a Graphic Designer. It wasn’t until I graduated college that I gravitated towards marketing and by trying my hand at being an entrepreneur early on, I quickly learned that I had no idea what it meant to build a brand. So I decided to do research. Through trial and error and a few guinea pigs, I was able to develop my skills to what they are today, and I’m still learning.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, entrepreneurship is never easy. Over the years I have faced rejection due to the technicality that I was not Adobe Photoshop Certified. I was turned down for jobs and clients did not want to work with me because of it. There’s this stigma that if you don’t use photoshop that your graphics are not of quality and I am the representation that this is not true.
Continuing to press forward despite the rejection, I was able to be blessed with opportunities to work with clients such as Ms. Pat, Shamea Morton, V-103, and Jess Hilarious. As a shoutout to them, I appreciate each and every one of you for seeing the quality of my work for it is.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Although my services include Logos, Website Development, and E-flyers, I enjoy designing Motion Graphics the most. Being able to take a static image and break it into moving parts to create an engaging video is a magical experience. It brings a different level of joy to me and it does the same for my clients as well.
I think what sets me apart from others is that I don’t try to make my work look like everyone else’s. I focus on making my work look the way I feel when creating it. When you see my work, you see the creativity, perfection, and thought that was put into designing each piece.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Definitely surround yourself with like-minded people in your industry. Often times when things go wrong in business, or we are stuck, we like to go to our family and friends to talk about it, but they don’t understand as much as someone who is in it. Forming a small group, and making those connections can help you stay grounded and receive sound advice on how to move forward in business.
Over the years, I have made connections with other designers and we support each other when it counts, and I can’t express how important that is. It’s like we have our own sisterhood and it’s amazing.
