Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristin Thorsen.
Hi Kristin, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My journey began in the vibrant city of Atlanta, where I was raised, and I currently reside in the charming neighborhood of Decatur. Creativity was a constant presence in my life, thanks to my mother’s artistic inclinations that inspired me throughout my upbringing. My academic path commenced at Georgia Perimeter College, which led to a remarkable opportunity—an art school exchange program in Finland, made possible by a scholarship. This experience fueled my passion for the arts and set me on a trajectory toward further education.
Subsequently, I earned a scholarship to attend the Atlanta College of Art, a pivotal step that honed my artistic skills and perspective. The culmination of my formal education occurred in 2004 when I proudly graduated. As I stepped into the world beyond academia, I began to immerse myself in Atlanta’s art scene, participating in gallery exhibitions that allowed me to showcase my burgeoning talent. Soon, my artistic journey took an exciting turn as I delved into the world of juried Art Festivals, expanding my reach and connecting with a diverse audience. This trajectory commenced in 2005, a path I have passionately pursued ever since. The pivotal juncture arrived in 2012 when I made the pivotal decision to transform my passion into a full-time profession, solidifying my commitment to a career in art. My initial artistic expression revolved around architectural abstract paintings, a genre that allowed me to capture the intricate beauty of urban landscapes.
However, with the arrival of the pandemic, I seized the opportunity to delve into mixed media, exploring new avenues of creativity and self-expression. This exploration culminated in my current body of work, a testament to the transformative power of challenging circumstances. In essence, my journey is one of continuous growth and evolution, shaped by my early exposure to creativity, nurtured through educational opportunities, and solidified by my unwavering dedication to pursuing a life immersed in art. From the galleries of Atlanta to the vibrant energy of art festivals, my experiences have sculpted me into the artist I am today—always evolving, forever inspired.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My journey as an artist and festival exhibitor has been a dynamic mix of triumphs and challenges, each contributing to my growth and resilience. While my path has been marked by numerous achievements, it has certainly not been without its hurdles. Navigating the art festival circuit exposed me to the unpredictable nature of weather, which at times has been far from favorable. Enduring through storms, extreme heat, and unexpected downpours has taught me adaptability and the importance of contingency planning. Additionally, the heartache of encountering damaged artwork and even a flooded booth underscored the vulnerability that comes with putting one’s creative endeavors on public display.
Beyond the elements, my journey also involved a steep learning curve in understanding my target audience and the geographic markets that resonate most with my work. This process of discovery required a blend of intuition and data analysis, allowing me to fine-tune my approach and optimize my presence at various festivals. As an artist who transitioned into the role of a small business sole proprietor, I grappled with mastering the intricacies of running a successful enterprise. Learning the ropes of business strategies, financial management, and effective marketing were essential, albeit demanding, aspects of my growth.
In retrospect, while the road has been marked by challenges, each obstacle has equipped me with invaluable lessons. The hurdles I’ve faced have only deepened my understanding of my craft and fortified my commitment to pursuing a career I’m passionate about. Just as a masterpiece emerges from layers of brushstrokes, my journey has been shaped by the interplay of successes and setbacks, culminating in a narrative that continues to unfold with determination and an indomitable spirit.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
At the core of my artistic journey lies a deep fascination with architecture, a theme that has threaded through my work consistently over the years. Presently, my creations can be best described as a vibrant and exuberant fusion of mixed media. This dynamic approach involves the harmonious interplay of color, texture, and various materials like text, collage, and tactile elements such as wood, metal, and felt, which collectively breathe life into my pieces. What brings me the greatest sense of pride is the unwavering authenticity that resonates in every brushstroke and element of my artwork. My creative process is an unfiltered reflection of my perspective and experiences, resulting in an artistic voice that stands distinctly on its own, free from imitation or replication. This uniqueness is a testament to my dedication to self-expression and the genuine passion that infuses every piece I create, setting me apart as an artist who seeks to capture the essence of architecture through a lens uniquely mine.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
Atlanta holds a special place in my heart for the incredible diversity it brings to the table. It’s fascinating to witness how each neighborhood boasts its own distinct personality, from the range of restaurants to the array of activities and entertainment options. The city thrives on a rich tapestry of cultures and experiences that meld together to create a vibrant and dynamic environment. However, like many who call Atlanta home, I can’t help but lament the infamous traffic congestion that plagues the city. Navigating through the gridlock can be a daunting task and often feels like an unwelcome backdrop to the otherwise vibrant life Atlanta offers.
