Today we’d like to introduce you to LaKisha Malcom.
Hi LaKisha, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Dentistry and Aesthetics fell in my lap. I had hoped to become a midwife. However while I met a Dentist who offered me a job while attending the University of Georgia (GO DAWGS!) and I worked for her for one summer, that summer turned into a 22 years of career. I fell in love, I felt at home, and I felt peace. There was nothing more rewarding than handing a patient a mirror and watching them tear up as they are smiling in confidence for the first time in a long time.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There are no smooth roads in Atlanta, LOL. Everything is potholes and roadblocks. I worked hard, harder than most in my field. Women of color only make up 2.4 percent of Dentistry. There is nothing easy about proving yourself in a field where you are almost non-existent…
I had a Doctor tell me early in my career that I would never make it in Dentistry. She later hired me to train her employees to do what I do … However the place where I’m at in my career came from 7-day work weeks on top of classes and continuing education.
I lost both my parents, my grandmother and aunt… There were times I didn’t even want to get out of bed. But life doesn’t hand you a glass of lemonade it hands you lemons you can either make the lemonade or not drink. I choose to enjoy something refreshing.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I work in dentistry (Gallery 32 Dental Arts & TMJ Treatment Atlanta), I’m a licensed aesthetician and do laser aesthetics, as well as own a photography business.
In my dental office, we specialize in Cosmetic Dental Makeovers, TMJ; however we are a general dental office and as we were voted one of the BEST DENTIST in Atlanta by Atlanta Magazine for the last three years, We’d like to say specialize in AMAZING DENTISTRY. Our Hygienist, Erin is amazing. Our front office team Ginny & Nia, makes you feel like old friends when they talk to you on the phone and when you come in. Dr. Allman is a master at what he does and is one of the smartest Dentists I know. Dr. Jones Is a genius with TMJ patients. And I’m who I am because I work with an amazing group of people who Love what we do and do it because we LOVE our patients.
Someone once told me that if I’m leading and no one is following me, I am only walking. My patients trust me, they believe in me, My Co-workers believe in me and if I suggest something, they are right behind me. Supporting me following me, and always encouraging me to be better than I was the day before.
I am the change I want to be in my field and I try every day to be an example of that to everyone around me in what I learn, what I teach and what I practice.
Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
Anything that involved the University of Georiga Football. I had an amazing childhood. I had two parents who taught me to never give up never stop learning and reminded me daily that I was stronger, braver and smarter. I traveled often, was loved and hugged daily.
