Daily Inspiration: Meet Lazaro Murillo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lazaro Murillo.

Hi Lazaro , so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Growing up the only American born in a Mexican family, movies, TV, and music were my gateway to the outside world. I fell in love with all art from a young age, though it took me until I was about 10 to seriously become moved by heavy metal, and I’ve been addicted since. After highschool I enrolled in community college, hellbent on one day making a living from a film career. During college in Fall 2023, two friends from Instagram and I started a Spanish language punk/cumbia crossover band, Los Sex Molcajetes. Now, the band is growing steadily, I’ve got an associate’s degree in film, I’ve got a decent day job, and I’m still hellbent on having a successful film (or music!) career.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It hasn’t been easy, juggling jobs, a social life, a band, college, relationships, and a social life can’t get exhausting. Especially when you’ve got bills to pay. But I’d be lying if I said I didn’t love it.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I play guitar and do vocals in Los Sex Molcajetes, along with Jordy on bass and Jasir on drums. What sets us apart is the fact that our lyrics are exclusively in Spanish, and we make an effort to put Latin rhythms in our sound.

On the film side, I do mainly photography right now and hoping to dip my toes in actual film productions soon. I like to think what sets me apart is my eye for color and grading every shot not to look like real life, but better than it.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lesson is to stay disciplined with practicing your craft. There’s no downsides to more and more practice, and it’s the best way to grow.
