Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Hackney.
Hi Lisa, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I graduated from NC A&T in 2009. I’m a self-taught acrylic artist, and my business is named “Love, Li Art” (lovely art). I’ve always been creative, but my grandmother lit the spark. I have been painting for about six years.
“Love, Li Art” focuses on custom art, mobile paint parties, and custom paint kits. My paint parties are unique because most of my parties start with a blank canvas. Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I’m proud that I’ve been able to start an art business and keep it going while working full-time. When I started my business, I had no idea I would work with so many people. The pandemic has caused a definite speed bump, but I have been able to come up with creative ways to keep my business going.
The pandemic stopped the paint parties, so I pivoted and created custom paint kits. Now my customers can order a custom canvas which includes paint and paintbrushes.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I love doing paint parties because I love to teach. Most of my classes start with a blank canvas. I often hear, “I can only draw stick figures!” but everyone leaves with a painting they’re proud of. It’s the best feeling!
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lesson I’ve learned is confidence. It’s not easy to put yourself out there sometimes. I’m constantly pushing myself to take chances and trust my instinct. It’s easy to get caught up in the comparison game, but I must create my way.
